Medical & Travel Expenses for Jake

Donation protected
Jake Pollock is a 25 year old who had his first seizure when he was only 12 years old.  At the age of 16, he was diagnosed with left temporal lobe epilepsy and has been hospitalized more times than the family can remember.  The epilepsy that Jake has is surgically and medically intractable (not curable).  He has complex partial seizures that sometimes progress into generalized tonic clonic (otherwise known as grand mal) seizures.

Now Jake is facing a new set of challenges.  After being cleared by his doctors and DMV, Jake found his dream car in Seattle and flew out to bring it home.  Unfortunately, he never made it there and was involved in a car accident while still in Seattle on Saturday, September 30th.  He sustained serious injuries including a collapsed lung and a traumatic brain injury with a diffuse axonal injury (DAI). Jake was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he is receiving excellent care. He was intubated on the scene as he was found to be in status epilepticus (a state of constant seizure).

The MRI revealed that Jake had a stroke, a possible tumor on his adrenal gland, and multiple hemorrhages in his brainstem, cerebellum and occipital lobe of his brain.

We won't know the extent of the damage or long term impacts for awhile but we expect that the road to recovery will be a long one.

Jake's parents reside in Illinois and his sister and aunt live in California.  His family has been away from home and with him since the accident occurred.  Since they do not have family or friends in the Seattle area, they are staying at nearby hotels.  The costs of their airfare, hotel, meals, etc is adding up -- and these expenses are not covered by insurance.  Jake will also have some considerable ongoing medical expenses -- and eventually, his transportation costs to bring him home could be upwards of $100k.

Jake's family is one of the most generous we've ever encountered -- and they are always there for their friends and family when in need, no questions asked.

Now is the time to help Jake and his family remain on their feet while they focus on what's most important, Jake's recovery.   Please consider a donation to this wonderful family in need - any amount is greatly appreciated and will mean more to them than you know.
