SAVE THIS HISTORIC BARN

The money raised will be used to rehabilitate this historic barn in Lexington, Georgia. Located on 47 acres, it once served the farming needs of hundreds of acres at the turn of the 20th century. It was long held by the Harrison  family as evidenced by the gravestones found in the family cemetery plot on the property.

This is a pre-tobacco gable barn. This style was popular in the Appalachian South of the United States. Settlement era farm families built sturdy livestock barns to house the animals, hay and grains that kept the family fed and clothed. Now becoming more and more rare, these pre-tobacco livestock barns can be spotted among the older farmsteads by their tell-tale steep 'A' gable roofs. Although now covered in a tin roof, this barn pre-dates metal roofing and was once covered with hand split, white oak shingles. The artifacts found inside the barn give a clue to its farming past.

The rehabilitated barn will be brought back to use by housing our goats, rabbits and other farm animals- giving it a new life and purpose on our family homestead.
