Sarah Needs a Kidney Transplant

Donation protected
Twenty-two year old medical student Sarah Ezekiel is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. She was recently diagnosed with End-Stage Kidney Disease. In many African countries, the brutal reality is that kidney disease is usually not detected until the kidneys have failed completely. Most people do not have health insurance and the cost of a transplant, modest by Western standards, is beyond their means. To make matters worse, kidneys from deceased donors, the usual source of organs in developed nations, are not often available. Long-term dialysis is not a viable option, either. Consequently, the mortality rate is high. Sarah’s best hope for her future depends on her receiving a kidney transplant. I have set up this GoFundMe to help achieve this.

Sarah has dreamed of saving lives since she was a small child. Friends and family remember her as a girl with a big smile and an even bigger heart. Her older brother tells this story: “I can remember when she was 4 or 5 years when we all were having dinner and my Mom called her ‘Ada,’ which means first daughter in our language, what will you like to be in the future, and she said doctor and Mom asked her why and she said so she can take care of Mom when she is sick, and we all started laughing that evening.”

The youngest of three children, Sarah overcame one obstacle after another with dedication and hard work. In high school, she was awarded a scholarship for her academic excellence. Finally her dream was about to come true when she enrolled in a university medical college with the goal of becoming a surgeon. When first her mother and then her father passed away, Sarah refused to give up. She overcame her grief, studied hard, and passed her exams. Sarah’s ambition is to help the less privileged in medically underserved rural areas.

Now in her third year of medical school, Sarah is an extraordinary young woman. Everywhere she goes, people fall in love with her kind heart and her desire to help others. The doctor who first diagnosed her was so impressed, he now considers her like his own daughter.

Sarah lives with her two brothers, one of whom is also a student. Her oldest brother, a recent engineering graduate, has been struggling to support his family. Her other brother is a "perfect match" and has volunteered to donate a kidney. They have asked their American friends to help raise the funds for her surgery.

The goal of this GoFundMe is to help save Sarah’s life by making a kidney transplant possible.

Sarah has never given up her faith in the goodness of people. Let’s show her what we can accomplish together and restore her dream of saving lives.
