Help Flor Family Deal with Fire and Water Damage

"I'm pretty sure my purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others..." - D. Flor

For those that know me through social media, I'm sure you're wondering "what the hell happened to you now?" Well buckle up, boys and girls...

For those of you that don't know me, my name is David Flor. I am a video game developer (PainRift, The Opera, and a bunch of games I can't tell you about), ENnie-nominated RPG publisher (A Night in Seyvoth Manor, Festival of Magic, The Coming Dark), alternate reality game designer (Looking Glass Labs), and living manifestation of Murphy's Law. I currently live in Miami, Florida with a wife and son. You can find me at @BrainClouds on Twitter most of the time.

For some time I've been dealing with adversity, but November 2021 has been particularly horrible...

  • First week of November I had to say goodbye to my 15-year-old beagle T-Bone.
  • Second week of November I lost my father-in-law to cancer. I had to foot the bill for the funeral arrangements and, I hate to say it, but it was... well... a lot.
  • Third week of November I had some rather expensive maintenance work that needed to be done on the family cars, as well as an unexpected jaunt to Central Florida to deal with a family situation.
  • Several other things mixed in and around all that, things that I'd really rather not elaborate on except to say they were most definitely expensive things.

I thought I would finally get through November, but nooooo...

On November 29th, 2021, a $40 Amazon-bought security camera I had to monitor people approaching my front door decided it had enough and, well, exploded, igniting the surrounding curtains with it (thankfully, we didn't have a Christmas tree or it probably would have gone up too, making the situation worse). If it were only that I'd be reasonably OK, but the ensuing fire reached a sprinkler head which popped and showered my entire living room. Then, for who-knows-what reason, the hall sprinklers kicked in and emptied enough water to fill Lake Okeechobee into my first floor. So now I have quite a mess.

I won't get into specifics about my landlord or the situation there, but suffice to say I don't have renter's insurance. Repairs are underway, sort of, but as it stands now I'm at least on the hook for the "demolition" as the majority of the drywall in my living room is removed, part of the ceiling is replaced, every strip of molding on the first floor is cleared, and a literal dozen or so fans and dehumidifiers are rolled in to my house to make sure I don't have to replace more than necessary.

As it stands now, costs are approaching $4K and I will likely be on the hook for it very soon. We are having discussions to mitigate that, but honestly I can't wait. I can't sit and hope that these things would resolve themselves, I need to take action.

Personally, I hate doing things like this... I'm doing this as a last resort because I've already done the impossible getting through all the other crap that November has served up for me. I've asked everyone for help so far, and many people have gone out of their way to get me to where I am now, but I can't bring myself to keep asking more and more from those same people. So I'm launching this GoFundMe in the hopes that it reaches a different audience.

Thank you for your support in this.
