Abernethy Apartment Complex Concern

Update, 7/17: We're still well shy of our goal, but here's what's been going on since the last update:

- We're in the process of narrowing down our choices for legal representation. With that being said, many choices range from $250-$300 per hour, with as high as $3,000.00 for retainer to represent us at the appeal meeting. Trust that we're going to make the best choice possible to defend our case.
- We're also gathering some credible sources for expert testimony, which will help bolster our argument at the appeal.
- Flyers and community information will be going out this week, now that we've got a firm date: August 2nd at 6:30pm, at Gladstone City Hall. We're looking to firmly pack the room and an overflow room will be used as well. We want to make a great impression for this first, and any subsequent, meeting!

Thank you again for your donations and continued support. Please get the word out to your friends!

Change.org: Petition to Gladstone City Council concerning this development

Our Gladstone community group known as "Abernethy Apartment Complex Concerns (AACC)" is seeking to raise funds to help with costs associated with opposing a proposed 48-unit apartment development off of Abernethy Court in Gladstone, OR.

We understand development is necessary for an ever-growing metro area and city, but it needs to happen in a careful, well-thought-out manner.  Our primary concerns are associated with a nearby wetland (listed as the "Olson Property" on the map), as well as classified habitat we believe, according to GIS maps, to be on the property itself. Furthermore, the developer is attempting to shoehorn this development into an area of well-established, single-family homes. We believe our city's planning commission was rushed into a decision, without being able to fully consider other factors we felt should have had impact on their decision.

If our appeals fail, and this application is approved, it could set precedence for how Gladstone handles development in the future near natural resources.

We do not oppose development outright, but we have a desire to ensure the developer and local municipalities practice responsible construction, and, based upon our research, we believe there are other viable, less-impactful alternatives for the developer to consider.

We believe that this development does not fit our community, and we are seeking to procure the needed counseling to see that it does not get approval.

We are looking to raise funds for the various costs associated with our endeavor, including:

- The cost of appealing our planning commission's decision to the City of Gladstone
- Hiring an attorney to aid in our efforts
Grassroots campaigning (flyers, community packets, etc.)
- If necessary, the cost of a final appeal to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals, should it reach that stage.

Please consider helping us as we seek to stop this kind of development in the City of Gladstone.

Thank you, from the AACC team!
