My Name is Ronald Emrich, I am a 56-year-old with cerebral palsy that has affected my lower quad. For most of my life I had lead a productive life. With the support of my family I attended public school, went to college, and held a variety of jobs: starting with a paper route when I was a teenager to a sales position that had me traveling the lower 48 states. I have always been active in one project or another. I have three boys who were in Boy Scouts, two of them earning the rank of Eagle and myself achieving the Wood Badge Adult Leadership. Being able to be outside and continuing to work around the house independently is very important and rewarding to me. I am an active member in our community, heavily involved with the Millersport Lions Club and with our church.
In 2010 I was in so much pain and discomfort that my family doctor urged me to look into filing for disability. After 3 months of therapy and with state recommendation I filed and received Social Security Disability. In the past seven years my use of my muscles has deteriorated. I no longer can stand or walk for more than a couple minutes. Depending on a wheelchair to keep me mobile has become an everyday occurrence. It has become necessary to purchase a van that will be used to transport me in my wheelchair to appointments and other social events. I have taken the state certified course and have received my hand control driving license.
With our limited income, and with increases in the cost of medical care and just about everything else, it would be a great hardship to try to make a monthly payment on a vehicle. We have found a used van with ramp accessibility and added the assisted driving recommendation prescribed to me. We have had some donations already, but we still need to pay off the remaining amount. Could you please consider donating for the purchase of this van?
