The Mission For SustainableFishing

Bringing a Hackathon to African cities.

My name is Bamidele. I am post-graduate student at Seneca College in Toronto where I study Project Management for IT. Here, I landed an internship at HackerNest , a non-profit organization that brings together tech communities around the world. Hackernest has provided me with the opportunity to integrate my technical background with my passion for building communities and engaging in social causes.I have made it my mission to bring these opportunities back to my home country of Nigeria and other communities in Africa including Egypt, Uganda, Kenya & Ghana, these countries were strategically selected because achieving success there will trickle down to smaller countries in those regions. I am looking for CAD9,950  for all travel and accommodation expenses needed to travel to Lagos and Cape Town for three weeks to help organize the international Fishackathon. This event is aimed at bringing together tech enthusiasts and fishery experts to tackle issues surrounding sustainable and ethical fishing practices in these communities.

Earlier this year I participated in DementiaHack and was featured in this blog article, Hackathons build community. They bring people together to develop innovative solutions to real world problems. They lead to sustainable, local solutions that have the potential to solve problems and create jobs. They bring synergy to communities and allow for exciting opportunities to share insights and discover that by working together, we become better. Currently, the hackathon community in these cities is very small, and there is little institutional knowledge in the way of organizing a large-scale Hackathon event. I will not only assist in the organization of this year’s Fishackathon, but will also provide tech leaders in those communities with our Hackathon Playbook, which includes step by step instructions on how to organize world class hackathons. In doing so, I hope to bring more independence to these African communities in developing innovative, local solutions to social and environmental issues.

Fishackathon will bring together leading technology professionals and industry stakeholders to solve a crisis that immediately influences the communities I will be working with. Consider the following facts:

-       Nigeria’s fishing sub sector contributes about 3-4% of the country’s annual GDP and is an important contributor to the population’s nutritional requirements, constituting about 50% of animal protein intake (FAO 2016)

-       According to a Nigerian fishing executive, Nigeria’s fishing industry has been decimated by piracy and the country now imports 80% of its fish (National Intelligence Council).

-       Nigeria loses $60million annually to illegal fishing (Falaju 2016)

-       Regional governments could generate $3.3 billion (8x the $400 m they currently raise) by developing fishing processes and indigenous fishing fleets, and selling foreign fishing rights (Falaju 2016)

-       By developing fishing sectors, western African governments could create up to 300 000 new jobs (Griffen 2016)

Hackathons require a high level of organization. I hope that by meeting with important stakeholders I can demonstrate the value of this event and recruit the necessary human resources. In traveling to Lagos and Cape Town, I will have the ability to recruit, train and collaborate with technical and industry experts in order to organize the logistical details of running a Hackathon.

I appreciate your support and donations in my ambitious endeavour to bring the social, technological and economic benefits of a Hackathon to African countries. Any amount makes a difference!
