Save 2017 Ward 8 Farmer's Market

Tax deductible
In 1998, the only full-service grocery store in Ward 8 closed its doors.  Residents organized to ensure that their 65,000 neighbors would have access to seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables. John Gloster convened Ward 8 leaders, including many ANC commissioners, to tackle the issue.  Then ANC Commissioner Melvin Sims suggested a farmer’s’ market as a way to move past the lack of responsiveness from the District government at the time, and the Ward 8 Farmer’s Market (W8FM) was born.

From our early days at the Old Congress Heights School to our years at THEARC and our new home at Martin Luther King Elementary School, W8FM has persisted as a volunteer-driven community-based initiative. We are the response to a corporate food system’s failure to serve our community.

Other markets have come and gone, and W8FM IS fortunately no longer the Ward 8’s only source of healthy food. Yet we play a unique role as the only traditional Saturday market linking rural farmers directly with residents.

In 2016, we welcomed over 1,800 customers and distributed more than $12,000 in Produce Plus checks redeemable for free fruits and vegetables.

We provide a low-barrier vending opportunity for local entrepreneurs offering prepared foods, cosmetics, and crafts.

We partner with other organizations to provide popular education on nutrition, exercise, gardening, and green living.  We speak in support of policies and programs to fight poverty and reduce health disparities.

Today, we face a financial shortfall that threatens our ability to operate a successful market this summer and fall. If we do not secure at least $8,000 by May 12, we will be forced to cancel our 2017 season.

If you value having a market in Ward 8, please give.

If you are want all families to reap the benefits of fresh, healthy food, please give.

If you would miss the market if were to close, please give.

If each of our 611 Facebook followers gave just $14, we would exceed our goal!

Your contribution is fully tax-deductible, and will be recognized with special updates and offers. No gift is too small; no gift  is too large.
