New & Emerging Authors

My name is Dani (a.k.a. Ynes). I am the Publisher at Balance of Seven. I’ve been in the pubs industry for more than 10 years; I was a corporate editor for three, managed a team of editors for four, and I’ve spent the past five years doing strategic planning, marketing and promoting for publications, as well as managing corporate copyright. I’ve helped more than 1,300 authors publish (many for the first time), and I hope to double that number in the next five years.

Today is my birthday.

As many of us have seen, Facebook offers an option to use your birthday to ask for donations to an organization of your choice. I have chosen to set up a fundraiser for Balance of Seven, my small speculative fiction press and literary alliance.

At first blush, this might seem like a self-promotional heap of bologna. You might think I’m some fat-cat lining my pockets to go drive my yacht down to the Bahamas, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Many of the most dedicated writers I speak to every day are working in retail, food service, or are on disability. Others have infants, toddlers, or they home school their children. They don’t have a lot of money to enroll in expensive online courses, and they often can’t travel to conferences and retreats. They also don’t have the training or expertise in professional publishing, and the unfortunate reality is that because of this, they are at risk of being taken advantage of by mega-platforms that will take most of their royalties, or predatory publishers that will claim most of their rights.

I believe, with every ounce of my being, that new and emerging authors should have access to the knowledge they need—they should know what to look for, what to avoid, as well as have the tools to successfully write, market, and promote their work.

So, I’m asking for your help.

I’m seeking support to be able to build systems and services to make this information available to new and emerging authors. Currently, I’m working to design a series of classes to offer using a “pay what you want” model (e.g., Understanding Copyright for New Authors). I’m also testing a strong accountability program for writers to help them finish their books and short stories.

And we’re also making dreams come true by publishing two anthologies per year for our new and emerging authors. The stories we publish undergo an acceptance/nonacceptance process, and accepted submissions go through two rounds of editing, and I work one-on-one with each accepted author to help them develop a promotions plan specific to them. I personally do the market research, teach audience development, as well as draft all copyright contracts using my experience to ensure fairness to authors. There are many overhead costs associated with publishing (e.g., copyright registration, ISBNs, cover art, printing, etc.), which Balance of Seven covers in full for our authors.

Empowering new and emerging authors is my calling. It’s what I was put on this earth to do.

Make a contribution today—and you, too, will be giving writers the tools for empowerment and success.
