UPDATE
Deeply grieved we must announce that the body of Mattijn has been found today. We know now that he has not survived the kayak accident of last Monday.
Mattijn's partner, brother and friends are now with the body and we are making arrangements to get them back to The Netherlands as soon as possible, together with the body.
As a family, we are deeply struck by the sad news. We are finding support in eachother in this difficult time.
We feel very thankful for the great moral and financial support that we received during the search operation. Because of this, we now have clarity on Mattijn's fate.
For now, please respect our privacy as we need time and space to make all the arrangements necessary to bring our beloved Mattijn back home.

Tot ons grote verdriet is vandaag het lichaam van Mattijn gevonden. We weten nu zeker dat hij het kajakongeluk niet heeft overleefd.
Mattijns vriendin, broer en vrienden zijn inmiddels bij zijn lichaam en we kijken hoe zij, met het lichaam, zo snel mogelijk terug naar Nederland kunnen komen.
We zijn als familie diep geraakt door het trieste nieuws en vinden steun bij elkaar in deze moeilijke tijd.
We zijn enorm dankbaar voor alle steunbetuigingen en donaties die we hebben ontvangen voor de zoekactie. Dankzij deze steun hebben we nu duidelijkheid over Mattijns lot.

Please help us save Mattijn Lahuis, our beloved son, brother and boyfriend. His kayak capsized in the Lao jungle after a strong current made him crash into a tree in the water. The kayak got stuck underwater. Three other people who crashed managed to crawl to the shore. Mattijn has not been seen since.
Since the accident, 30 July, local police officers and volunteers have been searching for Mattijn in the river and its surroundings, remote jungle villages. A rescue operation with a helicopter is his chance of survival. Without this we are fearing the worst. But we cannot pay for the entire operation ourselves. We need your help.
DREAM TURNS INTO NIGHTMARE
Mattijn went to Laos first in February and came back with two friends to share with them the beauty of the jungle. He believes choosing a professional guide and acting responsibly will let them stay safe. They go through the rainforest and bamboo fields, sleep in a wooden house in the jungle, have the time of their lives... Until the last day, when the dream turns into a nightmare. They paddle on the river, with the professional guide at the front. They turn a corner in the river, the current suddenly becomes much faster and they see a fallen tree in front of them. Two of four kayaks crash into the tree and capsize. Two friends of Mattijn and the guide manage to get on shore or hold on to the tree, but Mattijn is nowhere to be seen. They immediately look for him, and continue to do so in the next days, but to no avail. He might still be out there in the jungle, alone and probably injured, perhaps unable to call for help.
HELP SEARCHING
Local volunteers have been walking through the jungle, looking for any trace of Mattijn. Over ten kayaks have scoured the river up and down, looking for Mattijn. So far he has not been found. The jungle is very dense and the current was too rapid for divers. We can’t and we won’t put other people into danger while searching for Mattijn.
MATTIJN’S CHANCE: RESCUE TEAM
The Vientiane Rescue 1623 team of Laos are amazing people, doing everything in their power to help in emergency situations. Recently they helped Thai boys stuck in a cave and many many hundreds of people before that. They don’t charge anything for their help, however, we have to cover the costs of helicopter rental, including a pilot, which gets to €70.000 euros for three days of search. A helicopter is now Mattijn’s best chance to survive. It’s more efficient to search from above ground with equipment able to detect human body heat and objects under water, which are not supposed to be there. The current, local volunteers just do not have these same resources.
NIGHTMARE... AGAIN
As it turns out, these costs can not be covered by Mattijn’s insurance policy. Now we are alone in coming up with the necessary funds. However, we are determined to put everything into place to find Mattijn.

Help ons alsjeblieft met het terug vinden van Mattijn Lahuis, onze geliefde broer, zoon en vriend. Zijn kayak is omgeslagen in de Laotiaanse Jungle en is vast komen te zitten onder een boom in het water. Van de vier mensen die omsloegen kwamen er drie weer boven. Van Mattijn is sindsdien niets meer vernomen.
Sinds de dag van het ongeluk, maandag 30 juli, zoeken de lokale politie en vrijwilligers naar Mattijn in de rivier en de omliggende, afgesloten dorpjes in de jungle. Het belangrijkste is dat er zo snel mogelijk een reddingsoperatie met helikopter wordt opgestart om zijn kansen op overleving te vergroten. We zijn bang dat Mattijn het zonder deze interventie niet veel langer vol kan houden. Helaas kunnen wij niet alle kosten voor deze operatie dragen. We hebben hiervoor jullie hulp nodig.
DROOM VERANDERT IN EEN NACHTMERRIE
Mattijn gaat in Februari voor het eerst naar Laos en is daar in Juli opnieuw, dit keer met twee vrienden. Hij wil de schoonheid van de jungle met zijn vrienden delen. Mattijn gelooft dat ze, met behulp van een professionele gids en een verantwoordelijke houding ten opzichte van de overweldigende natuur, zich veilig kunnen houden. Ze trekken door het regenwoud en door de bamboe velden en slapen in een houten hut in de jungle. Het is één van de beste momenten van hun levens. Tot de laatste dag, waarop deze droom in een nachtmerrie verandert.
In 4 kayaks met een gids voorop gaan ze de rivier over. In de bocht van de rivier schrikt de gids van de stroming die plotseling versnelt, en onverwachts wordt een omgevallen boom in het water zichtbaar. De gids weet nog net te ontwijken, maar voor de twee kajaks erachter is het te laat. 2 van de 4 kayaks kapseizen. De kayak van Mattijn en zijn vriend Tom slaat om en komt klem te zitten onder de boom, onder water. Tom worstelt zich los en weet zich, samen met de anderen, in veiligheid te brengen maar Mattijn is nergens meer te bekennen. Daar direct op volgend, en in de dagen erna, wordt alles gedaan om Mattijn te vinden. Resultaten worden niet geboekt.
Het kan zijn dat hij er nog steeds is, in de jungle, waarschijnlijk gewond, en mogelijk niet in staat om om hulp te roepen of op de zoekacties te reageren.

Meer dan 10 Kayaks zijn de rivier meerdere keren op en af gegaan om naar Mattijn te zoeken, zonder resultaat. De jungle is erg dicht bebost en het stromende water te snel om nu te duiken. We kunnen en willen andere mensen niet in gevaar brengen om Mattijn te vinden.
REDDINGSTEAM
Het Vientiane Rescue 1623 reddingsteam uit Laos zijn fantastische reddingwerkers die hun uiterste best doen in noodgevallen als deze. Recentelijk hebben ze een groep jongens uit Thailand, die vast zaten in een grot, kunnen redden. Ze rekenen niets voor de hulp zelf, maar we moeten wel de kosten van €70.000 voor een 3-daagse zoektocht met helikopter (+piloot). Een helikopter is Mattijns beste kans op overleven. Het is veel efficiënter om hem vanuit de hoogte te zoeken. Het reddingsteam heeft de apparatuur om de omgeving te scannen op lichaamswarmte en objecten in het water te signaleren die daar niet horen. De lokale operatie heeft deze professionele middelen simpelweg niet tot hun beschikking.
OPNIEUW NACHTMERRIE….
De kosten voor deze operatie blijken niet te worden gedekt door de verzekeringspolis. Nu zitten wij zelf met deze enorme kosten, maar we willen elke kans inzetten om Mattijn te vinden.
