Rodney Scheel House Flood Recovery

Tax deductible
In 1995, a group of volunteers developed a 23-unit apartment complex for people disabled by HIV/AIDS called the Rodney Scheel House on Madison's East Side. We operate on the principle that a "community" is a place where a person can be the best he or she can be, as well as the people to help accomplish what one can't do alone.

The Rodney Scheel House has suffered significant flooding damage due to a water main issue that occurred on Thursday, June 21st.  The residents of the seven first floor units of the main building woke up to about two inches of standing water, which came up through the drains under their washer/dryers and in their showers.  The entire first floor of the main building had standing water, and the elevator shaft was full.  In a tremendous effort of coordination and compassion by our Board, Resident Services Coordinator, Project Home and WMC, we were able to move quickly to relocate the residents of the affected 7 units to a hotel that evening.

Since then, it has been determined that extensive remediation is needed - all flooring, drywall, and cabinetry that the water touched must be replaced. Residents' personal items are moved into pods to allow this work to happen. We are not yet sure of the extent of personal property damage.  Almost none of the residents have renters' insurance and remain in an extended stay hotel until the remediation of their respective units is complete.

Our resident population lives with compromised immune systems. We are doing a wholesale remediation to ensure no chance of mold, bacteria, or other lingering contaminant. The Rodney Scheel House Foundation was created to provide a safe and affordable place for people living with HIV/AIDS. We are working to make sure that they do indeed have a safe and secure place to live by paying costs of hotel stays, transportation, groceries, and other necessities. The Foundation's expenses in protecting our residents are projected to exceed $20,000.

Your donations will help the Foundation offset the costs associated with water damage restoration and clean up.
