Emergency Surgery Expenses

I think I should start this off by saying this is my last resort, and yes, I know how dramatic that must sound, so let me explain.

On Monday, July 23, 2018 I was admitted into the ER with severe lower abdominal pain which originally began Friday seemingly out of the blue. As absurd as it seems, I originally thought the pain was associated with my PCOS, but this was on another level and it didn't ease up as the weekend rolled into Monday the 23rd.

At noon the pain was unbearable. I couldn't stand or walk without assistance. It was at that point I knew 1) this wasn't period cramps and 2) I needed medical help, but at what cost? Literally. It might not come as a shock but I don't have insurance. I have been uninsurance for the past four years and was denied Government funded insurance through Medicaid because, and I quote, "You make too little to qualify".  Imagine that. The cut off for Medicaid in Virginia is $15,000 annually. Due to my current employment, I make on average $10,000 to $12,000 annually.

It's not hard to imagine, I was reluctant to even step foot on hospital soil, but I had to. Something was wrong and that something wound up being my appendix.

At 4:10pm Monday evening, I was informed my appendix was extremely close to bursting, and I needed emergency surgery. I wasn't given a choice. There was no chance my appendix could be treated with medication and simply get better. It was past the point of no return. I am unashamed to admit I cried because I knew how much this was going to cost out of pocket without insurance, but with no alternative but peritonitis (an even more serious condition once the appendix bursts) and possible death, I had to sign the waiver for surgery.

So here I am a week and two days later, on the mends but with my first round of bills coming in. I have applied for as much financial aid as possible, but the iNova charity foundation I am currently waiting to hear back from only covers the cost of the hospital stay
and amenities if I'm eligible. Surgeon costs are separate, according to the surgeon's office who I spoke with earlier today.

I've set up my Go Fund Me for $6,000. That will not only pay off the cost of my surgery, it will also cover the outstanding bills my fiancee and I will now have due to missing work for almost two weeks as well as covering Go Fund Me's fees for use.

Asking for this kind of help doesn't come easy for me. I was taught from a young age to be self-sufficient, and I've prided myself on being that way until now. I have to reach out for help because the medical expenses coming my way will cripple me for the foreseeable future if I don't. I understand we live in a world where nothing is guaranteed and everyone who isn't filthy rich is just barely skating by. I understand the hardships facing others far worse off than me.  I would never demand money from those who can't afford to part with their earnings.  All I ask is that you give what you can and if you can't please share my link.
