Planting Trees for the Future

Donation protected
Our aim is simple - to plant 500,000 trees in the Daintree region of tropical far north Queensland, Australia.

The Daintree Rainforest is the oldest rainforest on earth, and Australia's most diverse ecosystem; home to nearly 3000 species of vascular plant, 16 of the original 28 flowering plant lineages on the planet, and a huge array of wildlife, of which many species are endemic and unique - meaning they occur nowhere else on earth. Animals such as the iconic Southern Cassowary and Tree Kangaroos are well known, but the region is also home to lesser-known characters such as the primitive Musky rat-kangaroo, Boyd’s Forest Dragon and the 500 million-year-old living fossil, Peripatus (the Velvet Worm). The Daintree has been likened to a ‘living ark’ - home and refuge to the history of animal and plant evolution on earth. The area is unique and irreplaceable. Protection is vital, but there are areas where it can also be expanded upon.

Endangered Southern Cassowary

Working in conjunction with our local council, we are currently in the process of mapping, and have already identified multiple areas such as unused service roads and key areas of roadside reserve which are currently blanketed in exotic weeds. We will also be actively seeking working partnerships with private landholders in the area who wish to expand rainforest areas on their own properties.  With your help, all such areas can be reforested with suitable indigenous rainforest species, with a projected minimum planting of 500,000 trees by 2030 - to create a valuable and enhanced outcome for this unique World Heritage listed area.

We have approached and gained the support of multiple stakeholders and are now seeking start-up funds to take this project from concept to reality. These funds are needed for a work vehicle, power tools, safety equipment, insurance, and rainforest nursery expansion. The sooner we can reach this start-up funding target, the sooner we can start getting trees into the ground. Our expected first pilot planting of around 2700 trees is planned for November this year.

Daintree Life founders, Dave Pinson and Connie Kerr are committed conservationists and wildlife carers, and have a combined grounding and background in rainforest regeneration, environmental compliance, office administration, successful grant application writing, liaising with various local and state government departments, and we work closely with local elders and traditional owners regarding advice, inclusion and involvement. We aim to involve local schools and volunteer groups to enhance community pride in the area.

Our full story is set out on our website here

Your support to get this project off the ground will give us the means to physically start, which is the catalyst for planting half a million rainforest trees in the Daintree region. Every night we turn on the news to find environmental destruction, logging, and clearing of rainforest, and we all feel so powerless as we watch. Here is a way (with your help) to make a real and substantial difference to this valuable and unique part of the world. Here is just one example of what can be achieved:

Part of an old unused service road. The whole road needs 2700 trees.

A similar service road which was closed and planted just 4-5 years ago.

The tropical climate and high rainfall are highly conducive to fast growth, early canopy formation, weed suppression and highly visible results. The old road has almost vanished, and the rapidly growing forest now provides a valuable food resource for the local wildlife.

Please note that any funds raised above our target will go straight towards tree acquisition for our first rainforest planting in November.

Dave & Connie (Daintree Life) would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading and thank you for your donation. Together, we can make a real difference.
