Veronica's Breast Cancer Journey

Donation protected
In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. ( Psalm 18:6 )

Thursday August 2nd my sister Veronica Hurtado was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Breast Cancer a the young age of 39.  A 2cm mass was discovered in her left breast and the cancer has spread to a lymph node. At this time we know that there are other known masses and she is waiting for additional visits and doctors appointments.

Veronica has no health insurance and is not eligible for many of the assistance programs that are available for victims in her situation. She currently makes too much money for the size of her household to qualify. We know there are several programs out there and as a family we are exploring all of them at this time.  After her first visit with a recommended surgeon, we are preparing for the out of pocket expenses ahead. She is currently setting up cash appointments for an oncologist visit and a pet scan  to see if the cancer has spread anywhere else.  After this visit we will have a better understanding of what her next steps will be in this fight. Currently she is expecting to have a mastectomy followed with chemotherapy.

Now let me tell you about my best friend. My sister, Veronica, has been my best friend since day one.  She is a single mother of three of the best children an uncle could ask for. Veronica has always been the independent type. She moved out when she was 18 and has been supporting herself ever since. Her oldest son, Carlos Rey, will be 13 this coming New Years eve. Jonah is the wild middle child who keeps her on her toes everyday at the at age of 11. And last but not least is our sweet, Isabella, who just turned 8. Veronica has and continues to work hard to provide for her family.  If the four of them aren't running late to a soccer or football game , they are enjoying the Rocky trilogy on the couch.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

We have a small idea of what the upcoming cost will be and it's mind blowing.  As a family, we will figure it all and we know that god is on our side. I ask that you please say a prayer for my sister as she gets ready to fight this battle. Say a prayer for my niece and nephews as they get prepared for this journey with her. Please say a prayer for her doctors so that they are able to find every part of this disease and rid it from her body.
