PLEASE HELP TO SUPPORT 5 VETERANS AND FIRST RESPONDERS AFFECTED BY OPERATIONAL PTSD

100% NON-PROFIT Initiative is a Registered Canadian Non-Profit Corporation.

ROTO2 Scheduled February 6th 2020.

Alliance Veterans PTSD Retreat is a non-profit organization in partnership with Cummings Highlands Eco Resort Inc. & Katahimikan Yoga, owned by a 25 year Canadian Army veteran.  AVR was developed to serve the needs of veterans and first responders who are affected by operational Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Occupational Stress Injuries (OST) as a result of their service.

Our dedicated mentors are serving and retired military and first responders from Canada & USA who donate their time and experience for this program. The location is the beautiful island of Tablas Island, Romblon Province, in the Republic of the Philippines. It is the perfect balance between nature and convenience that allows the adventurer to feel the healing effects of the program,  but with the familiarity of a military brother/sisterhood. Cummings Highlands has donated their Eco resort as a hideaway for the adventurers as they participate in the wellness 14-day retreat. Each activity is offered with certified guides, instructors and supervised by attending mentors. It is a wellness experience that is like no other, that promotes healing through wellness activities and island adventure.

Researchers at Loughborough University have reviewed multiple clinical studies that looked at the impact of sport and physical activity on combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
Their findings: "physical activity enhances well-being in veterans by reducing symptoms and improving coping strategies". Symptom reduction in these studies seems to occur through a renewed sense of determination and hope, increased quality of life, and the cultivation of positive self-identity." The researchers explain that participating in sports and physical activities in a supportive setting help combat veterans gain or regain a sense of achievement.

Oftentimes those who put their lives at risk to protect their country or citizens experience extreme horrors. Others may have lived in constant high-stress situations or possibly be struggling to get past traumatic public service events and need a helping hand to heal. These disorders affect not only the veterans or responders themselves but also their families, it can affect the transition to civilian life, the ability to work, relate socially and to channel emotions or energy in appropriate ways. Physical activity, combined with veteran based trauma yoga/meditation that we provide has proven to provide therapeutic benefits to promote better mental health.

(Statistically, 1 in 6 fulltime Canadian Armed Forces members suffer from a mental disorder, 48% percent will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime, and 44% of our First Responders are affected by mental illness. )

The AVR program was carefully developed by military veterans, first responders and qualified mentors to add additional support to programs they have participated in.  AVR  offers constructive ways to reconnect with the core values of military service that include camaraderie they experienced during their service. Here on Tablas Island in the Philippines, we work on breaking down those barriers in a safe yet stimulating environment that encourages physical challenge along with mental and emotional support. Whether its activities like jungle trekking, diving, paddle boarding, mountain climbing or participating in our certified veteran trauma-based yoga or meditation class, participants are respected and can rest assured they are safe in the hands of qualified people who understand what they’ve been through.

AVR offers a unique opportunity to heal for those who have sacrificed for their country, and desire to move forward with their lives. We want to reconnect families.  With the program design, it facilitates valuable tools the participant will take back with them, and we believe contribute to restoring connections, relationships, communication and dialogue with the important people in their life. Your donations will be a key component in this patriotic endeavor. AVR's program is 100% non-profit, and all donations go directly to facilitate the veterans and first responders. We understand that stigma exists and those  affected from PTSD and OST may not wish to take their first step at home. We can help with that – our mentors support without judgments, respect boundaries,  and have a first-hand understanding of the triggers and working through them based on shared experience.

(Team building exercises)

With yearly documented crisis happening with so many veterans and first responders, it is important to continue to focus on those who have served and sacrificed during past and present conflicts. We invite you to join us in supporting our veterans and first responders in their healing process. By becoming a sponsor, you personally can make a concrete difference in a veteran or first responder's life. Together, we can promote healing and appreciate those who have served Canada or the USA in times of war, armed conflict and public safety. Mentors assist participants with the mental and physical building blocks for their recovery.

(Fifteen Canadian Forces members killed themselves in 2018, according to the Department of National Defence.
At the same time, more than 155 active service members have taken their own lives since 2010. That nearly equals the 158 killed while serving in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014.)
