The Story:

What if you had to choose between education and sanitation every month?
It seems like an unreasonable choice, right?

Unfortunately, lack of proper menstrual hygeine is making this a reality for many young girls around the world. The original Baala was created a few years ago by University of Warwick alumni. The intention was to help solve the problems of menstrual hygiene in India by distributing reusable cloth sanitary pads to women in rural India and teach them about menstrual and reproductive health. The success rate of the original Baala was high. In a survey conducted from 250 women, it was shown that 95% of them are extremely happy with the pads. The introduction of the pads has also resulted in an increase in the school attendance of these girls by 73%. In fact, 93% of women continued using the pads even after 3 months. Overall, the original Baala has reached 60,000 girls between India and Nepal, and this number is only increasing

Our Goal:

We saw the success of Baala and thought lets do more. That's where Project Baala Warwick  comes in. Our goal is to expand what Baala was doing in India, and try and bring it to Pakistan and Ghana.

Currently, we have three main aims:
●  To source the sanitary napkins which are reusable for up to 2 years, making them both environmentally and financially sustainable.
●  Train teachers and conduct workshops to generate awareness about menstrual and reproductive health throughout the schools in Pakistan and Ghana we will be working with.
●  Create a photographic record of the experience.

As of now, the price of production for one pad is £1.75. Our current aim of £4,000 includes the funds for six hundred kits of napkins, along with bags to place these napkins in and detailed information flyers to go with them. In addition, it will account for couriers and workshop training material.

We hope to eventually become self-sustaining by setting this up as a social enterprise, where we establish a profit-generating business model for creating and selling the products, with the profits being reinvested into the business.

For now, we need your help in getting this project up and running.  Project Baala envisions a world in which education is not abandoned and sanitation is not an obstacle, giving every girl the power to empower herself.
