STEM Lab Classroom for Saint Ambrose School

S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs are in need for schools throughout the nation.

What is STEM all about?  From the Nat'l Science Teachers Assoc (NSTA) website: "The STEM Classroom to provide a forum for ideas and resources middle and high school teachers will need to support these disciplines. By coordinating science and math courses with technology and engineering courses, teachers can give students a better understanding of the world in which they live. Few of today’s students understand the way in which these fields benefit our society or the variety of career opportunities that are available to them."

Why St. Ambrose in Schuylkill Haven?  We are a very tight knit community.  Our school has been educating kids for over 104 years! Our teachers are phenomenal.  Our classrooms are small and very hands on.  Our kids want to learn.  Our local community is ripe with professional backgrounds that all use STEM everyday.  i.e. machinists, carpenters, masons, architects, engineers, electricians, HVAC, science, manufacturing, etc.

What's the problem?  Tuition costs to send kids to a private school.  Some teachers pay for basic supplies using their own money.  How do we make our school more attractive than the large public schools in the area?  That's where a STEM lab program can help!

Want to join us in making a difference in our small community? We're raising money for St. Ambrose School in order to provide a startup STEM lab- classroom to pique the interests of younger students, to increase enrollment and bring the local area more in tune to what is common in leading-edge school districts.  If we can introduce a STEM lab class, then I foresee this becoming the "shining star" for other local schools to follow.

Who can this be offered to?  Enrolled St. Ambrose students, CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) students and those students willing to learn located within the local area.  Based on popularity, this could become a hub for after-school, night and weekend lab sessions.  All of this is determined by interest and available resources.

What do we need:  3rd to 8th grade age-related laptops, tablets, 3D modeling software, laser scanner, 3D printer, electrical circuits, robotic kits (i.e. Lego), math kits, mechanisms, hydraulics and pneumatic kits, white boards, brainstorming areas.

Timing:  Our goal is to raise enough funds to have STEM lab sessions available by the start of next school year. Any donation (monetary or equipment) will help make an impact.

Our happiest moments are when our kids come home excited about what they had learned in school.  We all know that look when the light bulb turns on.  Its even more rewarding when we see it happen with our kids.

Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to our small community, parish, school and most importantly to our kids.  Please contact me with any questions.
