Hello dear reader!
My name is Vera Hadzhiyska. I am a Bulgarian artist, photographer and curator based in England.
I study MA Photography at the University of Portsmouth and since January 2019 I have been organising my Photography graduate exhibition which will take place at Four Corners Gallery, Bethnal Green, London from the 3rd until the 7th of September 2019.
My work is focused on identity, collective memory and how political and historical events affect regular people. For the past 2 years I have been working on a project called “With the Name of a Flower” investigating the forced name changes of Bulgarian Muslims and how it has affected my generation who haven’t experience it first-hand.
The exhibition is the culmination of 2 years of hard work and dedication. If you are an artist yourself, or aware of the art industry, you know how expensive creating an exhibition can be – hiring a venue, printing and framing work, publishing a catalogue, transportation costs, providing refreshments for preview night and many more. Alongside the exhibition I am organising three workshops free for artists to attend, for which I have invited guest speakers.
I created this campaign because I am struggling to cover some of these expenses on my own. I have the kind support of the University of Portsmouth Professional practice fund, which covers the venue, transportation of work and the guest speaker fees (so the events can remain free for the participants), and refreshments. However, I am creating a catalogue for the exhibition which I have yet to print and I need to produce (print and frame) my photographs and installations for the show.
The publication is not simply a catalogue for the exhibition – it contains photographs of my work as well as several articles providing historical, political and archival information to inform the viewer and contextualise the work itself. I have calculated that printing the catalogues will cost £650 for 200 copies.
The other expense is printing and framing my photographs. That will cost between £600 - £800. Obviously, I am trying to cover most of the expenses myself but I would be really grateful for your support.
This exhibition and publication are major opportunity for me to showcase my work to important people in the industry which can help my professional development as an artist. Your support means a lot to me and any donations are greatly appreciated.
