WHY SAVE FELV CATS?
I volunteered for many years with many different rescues, and gained a lot of experience with FeLV cats. Since there was a great need for a shelter to host these cats who are hard to adopt, I broke away from volunteering to dedicate my time to creating a shelter where these cats can live out their lives.
Most shelters EUTHANIZE FeLV cats.
Why?
There is a lot of misconception when it comes to FeLV cats.
1. Testing in not very well understood.
2. The virus is misunderstood, and most shelters do not understand how contagious the virus really is.
3. It is believed that FeLV+ cats are sick and suffering.
4. A lot of shelters do not think the FeLV cats are adoptable.
5. There is a lot of confusion around the test results.
So all this leads to FeLV cats being euthanized.
It is believed that cats with FeLV suffer and are very contagious to other cats. Cats with FeLV do not suffer, They will only start to suffer when the virus starts to replicate in the lymphoid tissues and bone marrow. This results in persistent infections and usually the cat will succumb to FeLV related diseases within a very short period. However I have seen cats regress back to a healthy state even when the illness has progressed.
It is also believed that FeLV is very contagious, however I can tell you that it takes a long time before a healthy cat gets infected. So why is it the so called healthy cats are getting the FeLV virus. Well those healthy cats are not so healthy after all. And when I say healthy, I can tell you that I have not seen very many healthy cats in all the time I have been working for rescues and shelters. The diet fed today is for the convenience of humans, but unfortunately cats suffer a lot of health issues, like kidney disease, diabetes, obesity, and the list goes on and on......They have a weakened immune system, and therefore a very susceptible to catching viruses. A truly healthy cat will be very resistant to viruses, and other parasitical problems.
People are reluctant to adopt an FeLV cat, because of all the skewed information they have been provided with. They are worried they will be burdened with heavy vet bills, and of course they don't want a cat that will succumb to a short life due to the virus.
FeLV cats can be adopted out but it is preferable that they be the only cat in the household or with other FeLV cats. The virus is not transmittable to dogs, other species of animals, children or adults. And the vaccine is only 85% effective. And like I mentioned above, most cats today have a weakened immune system, so they are susceptible to all types of virus and other parasitical problems, because yes, a virus is considered as a parasite. But again a truly healthy cat is never at risk.
And then there is testing and understanding the test results which is a whole other subject, and I will be providing a link to all that information once I have completed my presentation.

MICKEY AND BABY SUCCESS STORY
Mickey and Baby were found outside 12 years ago. They had been living outside in a neighborhood in the West Island for 5 years. They had been left behind when their owners moved away. When I received them, they were already 10 years old, were both very sick, and had tested positive for FeLV. Baby lived to be 22 years old, and unfortunately passed away in 2018. Mickey passed away a year later at the age of 23 years old in 2019.
Never believe anyone who tells you that FeLV cats can only live a few years. This is absolutely false. If they are in a good environment, with lots of love, and lots of care, and great quality food, they can live to a ripe old age.
I proved this with Mickey and Baby!

We are a small team of two people, and up to now, we have been funding everything on our own. Presently we have 33 cats in our shelter, and they are all doing real well. We do not have our cats in cages. They are free to go wherever they want, and we provide them with the best care ever. We are often asked to take in more and more FeLV cats, but we have hit our limit due to budget restrain. We have the room, we just don't have the money, and we cannot risk taking more in, because this will mean we need to lower the quality of our care to meet our budget, and with FeLV cats this is not an option. We need your help to continue to help other FeLV cats who need to be saved and need so desperately an environment where they can live out their entire lives in a safe, loving, and caring environment.
Please help so we can continue our mission in saving more FeLV cats!
