Nick’s love for Uganda and it’s children

Our hearts are grieving for the sudden death of our dear father.  On Oct 24, 2019 Nick was Chosen by God to join him in his heavenly kingdom.

At this very difficult time we thank you for your love and support.

Nick enjoyed life, family and friends. He was a very simple man. Did not want much, did not need much. He was adored and loved by all who knew him.  He was a person of faith and lived life serving others before himself. His sense of humor and kind spirit is engraved in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of being in his presence.   

Dad loved Uganda. His face lit up whenever he spoke of it.

He was passionate about helping the poor and  the less fortunate.  He was especially fond of the children of Uganda.

In lieu of flowers, we thought donations to a charity in Uganda would be the closest to his heart. Two charities have been picked by the De Mello family:

Rays of Hope

Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja is a non-governmental, non-profit, interfaith organization that provides palliative care to patients with life threatening and life limiting illnesses (cancer, HIV/AIDS or any other life-threatening disease or trauma). It treats and cares for over 450 patients in Busoga Region, one of the poorest regions of Uganda. For the very advanced diseases, Rays of Hope help ease the pain and suffering and help our patients die in peace with dignity and love. Rays of Hope help other patients get the treatment they need, which otherwise they would not be able to access on their own. The absolute poverty and last-mile isolation of patients means Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja is often their only hope for treatment and care, making their work an immense and crucial challenge.

In Need Home is a non-governmental grass-roots organization dedicated to the care and protection of orphans and other vulnerable children, youth and women to realize their full potential in life. In Need Home works in the slums of Kibuli, Namuwongo and Wabigalo in Kampala providing access to health services, food, education, an economic empowerment programme and a ‘girl child education initiative’. Accessing a toilet is a big issue in Namuwongo slum because it costs an average of 200UGX ($0.01) per visit. This means that caregivers deny their children food to avoid them going to toilet. In Need Home has a centre near the Namuwongo slum where children have access to a clean toilet. INH interventions in the slums, focuses on the empowerment of the families especially the women who shoulder most of the responsibilities of the family. This is a grass roots NGO which relies heavily on individual donors.

Both charities are registered as NGOs in Uganda and have been vetted for by reliable sources and Isabelle, Nick’s Niece in Uganda, personally visited In Need Home. She will facilitate the donations.
