Funding for Sijo Documentary

한국 고유의 문화 양식인 시조는 음악과 시의 형식을 지닌 우리나라 대표 문화 전통 입니다. <시조 국제 저널> (Sijo—an international journal of poetry and song)은 시, 노래, 미술 등 다양한 형태를 통해 시조의 전통을 이어가는 작품을 출판하여 시조의 역사와 미래를 담은 문예지입니다. <시조 국제 저널>은 미국 매서추세츠주에 위치한 비영리 단체인 캠브리지 한국 연구원 (Cambridge Institute for the Study of Korea) 소속 코리아 텍스트 이니셔티브 (Korea Text Initiative)에 의해 발간되며, 정통 시조 및 이를 현대적으로 풀어낸 작품을 영문으로 소개합니다.

<시조 국제 저널>의 편집자들은 시조를 예술적 가능성을 탐색하기 위해 다큐멘터리 제작자 마이클 엉거(Michael Unger)와 함께 단편 다큐멘터리를 제작 중에 있습니다. 해당 작품은 음악으로서의 시조, 문학으로서의 시조 및 시조의 형식을 빌려 새로운 음악 장르 창작, 3D프린팅 기반 조각상 제작 등 도전적인 창작 활동을 펼치고있는 전 세계 현대 예술가들의 이야기를 담을 예정입니다.

현재 제작중인 해당 다큐멘터리은 2019-2020년 겨울 즈음에 마무리할 예정이며, 2020년엔 부산국제영화제(BIFF), 베를린 국제 영화제 (Berlin International Film Festival), 캐나다 핫독스 국제 다큐멘터리 영화제(Canadian International Documentary Festival), 트라이베카 영화제 (Tribeca Film Festival) 및 암스테르담 국제 다큐멘터리 영화제  (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)에 출품할 예정입니다. 이는 <시조 국제 저널>의 공식 웹사이트, 유튜브 채널 및 소셜 페이지에도 게재될 예정이며, 다큐멘터리에 등장하는 미술품은 2020에 발행 예정인 시조 국제 저널에도 포함될 예정입니다.

Sijo (pronounced “she-joe”) is a traditional Korean art form, or rather a constellation of art forms. It is and has been music and song. It is and has been poetry. Sijo—an international journal of poetry and song is a journal that explores what sijo has been and might be in the future by publishing germinative poetry, art, and song that claims to participate in the sijo tradition. We publish English-language works modeled on canonical Korean texts, as well as art which makes use of the sijo form as a point of departure to slant toward avant-garde modes and experimental domains. The journal is a production of the Korea Text Initiative at the Cambridge Institute for the Study of Korea, a 501 (C)(3) not-for-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

As part of our exploration of the boundaries of sijo as an artistic form/ forms, the editors of Sijo are working with documentary filmmaker Michael Unger to produce a documentary short. The documentary will be in three parts: part one will document and describe sijo as a musical tradition. Part two will investigate sijo as literary art. The twist and turn of part three will document how contemporary artists around the world are experimenting with sijo to develop new modes of artistic expression, everything from new musical genres to computer-generated, 3D-printed sculpture.

We have received generous support from the Literary Translation Institute of Korea (Thank you!), as well as Jang-Ok Oh and Won-Yung Hyun (Thank you!!), to help us begin the project. We need your help to finish it! Your donations will enable us to rent equipment, hire editors, purchase software for post-production, and pay entry fees for film festivals where we plan to submit the documentary.

Filming has already begun (see the images below). We plan to wrap up production in the winter of 2019-2020 and submit the documentary to a number of international film festivals in 2020, including the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the Berlin International Film Festival, the Canadian International Documentary Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). The short film will also be posted on the Sijo—an international journal of poetry and song website, YouTube, and other online forums. Artwork and imagery collected as part of the short film will also be included in the 2020 issue of Sijo—an international journal of poetry and song.
