Who We Are:
We are Indecorous Theatre Productions
To be Indecorous is to behave outside of good taste and propriety, to conflict with accepted standards and conduct. Based out of Philadelphia, Indecorous Theatre Productions roots itself in “Classical Theatre”, an art form that, in the modern era, has been claimed by a social elite, reserved for those blessed with enough culture or education or class.
This, in our opinion, is bulls**t.
Sure Elizabeth loved her some Billy Shakespeare, but the bread on his table was bought by the loud, unwashed masses who paid to stand in the dirt, laugh at some dick jokes and cry about love and betrayal.
At Indecorous Theatre Productions our mission is to take away the gated and guarded feel from these Classics and make them accessible and available to all. These stories are for everyone and for today. They resonate and grow and change. Using the beauty of these texts that have beaten time we want to tell new stories with new bodies and open up the conversation. Because at the end of the day, this work, these words, and art is about real people and all the diversity and change and indecorous energy real people create.
The Project:
We are excited to bring a new project to Philadelphia Theatre Week this winter and, true to form, we’ve decided to go with something Shakespearean: Romeo & Juliet.
Why this show?
Everyone has seen Romeo & Juliet and everyone and their ma has tried their hand at this story. There has been a lot of good produced but there have also been a lot of unsatisfying takes that either romanticize the “ultimate love story” or paint a cautionary tale about dumb teens.
For us, Romeo & Juliet has always been a story about the cycle of violence passed down through the generations. No matter how hard the kids try to change their fate and create a new reality, the infrastructure built by hate and the self-serving adults in power traps them. Whatever connection exists between our title characters, whether you believe it’s true love or just a light in the darkness, cannot exist in this world.
For reasons we have neither the time nor the space to get into, this feels pretty damn relevant today.
To modernize this piece we will be taking the story and the beautiful language as written and giving it to voices and bodies that have been kept out of the narrative for too long. As a company, we always strive for diversity. In the past we have had a lot of success working with and representing the LBTQA+ community. A lot of our best work and proudest moments have come bringing authentic queerness to these classics.
What we need to improve on is our diversity. We have failed in our past shows to present the diversity we want and need. Although we have tried in the past, there isn’t an excuse moving forward. We are taking this show as an opportunity to double down on truly providing diverse representation of bodies.
Why Should You Donate?
We are hoping to raise $10,010 for this production.
Our biggest priority is being able to pay all of the amazing artists we work with a fair wage for their time. We, the co-founders, have never paid ourselves and that’s the way it’s going to continue for the foreseeable future but we are still struggling to pay the incredible artists who bring their talent and heart to our productions.
The budget breakdown is as follows:
Venue:
- Performances: $840
- Rehearsals: $1480
Cast: $870 per actor + 7 actors = 6,090
Stage Manager: $1000
Set: $300
Costumes: $300
Full Budget: $10,010
All of the money we have made in the past got put 100% into our projects and whatever we had we put towards these magical creators. But, as any of you who make theatre know, making enough money to pay actors/artists fairly is a struggle.
Donating to us helps us find a venue, furnish a small amount of costumes and materials, and, most importantly, pay people for their time.

Everyone who donates $27.00 will receive a Romeo & Juliet poster signed by the cast! (Once the fundraiser has ended, you will have the option of picking up the poster from the box office or having it sent to you)
