Ermysted's XC Team - ISF World Championships

Ermysted's Grammar School Senior Boys Cross Country team has been selected as the English Representative in the International Schools Federation World Cross-Country Championships. They will race in English vests in the biennial event, to be held at Strbske Pleso, Slovakia in April 2020.

The team was initially contacted, along with a small number of schools of proven pedigree in running, and asked to say why Ermysted’s should be selected. This team have been awesome in terms of running throughout their time at school with a glittering array of awards. In Autumn 2017 as an U15 team they won the English Schools’ Cross-Country Cup Final at Sevenoaks in Kent.  As it is the English Schools’ Athletic Association who select the team to represent England this will have gone a long way towards their selection. However, more recent success in winning the King Henry VIII Relays in February of this year, and breaking the course record, will have cemented their selection as this is widely accepted as a schools’ national cross-country relay event.

In order to compete in Slovakia, the boys must pay for their own travel, accomodation and kit as there is no funding provided.  They are now in the process of raising funds themselves through a sponsored tread mill run and by providing additional car parking for the Skipton Christmas Market amongst other things.  This is unlikley to cover all of their costs so they are looking for additional sources of sponsorship and would be most grateful for any donations.

The team now selected comprises: Joe Carnelley (Bingley Harriers), Louis Hudson (Keighley & Craven), Arthur Peel (Keighley & Craven), Sebastian Segger-Staveley (Settle Harriers ), Alex Thompson (Wharfedale Harriers) and William Thompson (Wharfedale Harriers).

Having all started out as fell runners when young they have continued to compete on the fells as well as Cross Country.  They have all been consistent performers on the fells competing in BOFRA and FRA championships as well as several earning Yorkshire County vests on the fells.  Meanwhile in Cross Country most have earned North Yorkshire Schools or Yorkshire County vests to date.  Alex Thompson is current U15 boys National XC  Champion and also Intermediate Boys English Schools Cross Country Cup Champion.
