Support YWCA Life Member to publish her book!

Donation protected
My name is Janet Whitham. I am a proud Life Member of YWCA, having been engaged with the movement since I was 19. In 2005 I was the principle author of the book 'Before Their Time', detailing the history of the YWCA in Adelaide.

I have recently finished writing another book, this time about another YWCA member, and well known community member, Margaret Davey.

Margaret was President of the YWCA in Adelaide, (and a National Board Member) from 1956-1961. She was a long standing and committed supporter of the YWCA movement, organising YWCA Christmas and community events and fundraising thousands of dollars for the organisation and its members. Margaret received several awards for her community service, while also working for 21 years as a demonstrator for the Biology School at Adelaide University.

I have written this book to preserve her life in the history books.

It will cost me about $3000 to have the book ready to be published, and then a small cost per book. I am using my own funds towards this but I would very much appreciate any help in getting this book published and circulated.

I am very passionate about documenting women's history, and I believe Margaret Davey deserves to have this book published because she was in my view, and as the title of the book suggests, 'An Amazing Woman'.

Once the book is published we will notify all the donors so they can also purchase a copy.

My heartfelt thanks to you all,

Janet.

About the Author:

Janet Whitham commenced her journey with Adelaide YWCA in the early 1960s when she became a voluntary leader with the Reserve Girl Citizens on Saturday mornings. This was followed by Janet becoming an In-Service Trainee with the National YWCA thus achieving the skills to work as a Program Director/Youth Worker with Adelaide ‘Y’.

In late 1966 Janet took a slow ocean liner to England. The ‘overseas experience’ spanned three amazing years, two were in England, travelling on the Continent and working for the YWCA in East  Acton, West London. The third year was spent in the USA and Canada.

Janet was invited to be involved in two personally enhancing training experiences - a month (1967) with several others representing the YWCAs of Great Britain, Canada, Lebanon, India and Sweden in Geneva, Switzerland at World YWCA headquarters. The second was the International Training Institute, 1969, hosted by the International Division of the YWCA of the United States. Three months with over thirty women from many countries, getting to know each other and studying Communication through the Arts (including afternoon tea at the White House!).

Upon returning to Australia Janet was appointed to the position of National Youth Field

Officer, based in Melbourne. After a year in this position she returned to Adelaide to marry Peter, study for a Social Work Degree and become the mother of two wonderful daughters.

In the early 2000s the ‘Y’ beckoned again and Janet agreed to convene a group of women, all with extensive, invaluable knowledge and experience of the YWCA - the task, to compile a history to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Adelaide YWCA. This we did with sharing, laughter and some tears, culminating in the published book 'Before the Time: A History of the YWCA of Adelaide'.
