"Wisdom of the East" Multicultural Exhibition

Tax deductible
OVERVIEW
We're so excited to announce that the Calligraphies in Conversation Exhibition series is being invited to Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) for an exhibition titled “Wisdom of the East” from November 23, 2019 to January 31, 2020. This multicultural exhibition explores how the word of wisdom is expressed via the art of calligraphy through the cultures of Asia continent, from Far East to Central Asia, South Asia, and Near East.

With your support, the “Wisdom of the East” exhibition will spark an interesting conversation among different cultures, scripts, and languages existed in local communities and beyond from Chinese and Japanese to Baybayin and Hindi, to Arabic and Farsi.

WHY OUR PROJECT MATTERS
We commonly hear about examples--in the present and throughout history--of people creating physical, social, political, and religious boundaries intended to separate and divide; however, it is vitally important to create and raise awareness of the many instances of people crossing these boundaries in order to engage with each other and celebrate a shared humanity.

Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) and the artists invite you to join and support us as we take on this important task of bringing people from different backgrounds together through arts and culture.

THE IMPACT
In a multicultural region such as the Bay Area, there are ever more and more communities who wish to explore the way another culture thinks, speaks, prays, reads, and writes. If we think an intercultural conversation would be something worthwhile, quite often we must create special circumstances in which two or more members of the human family, who have hitherto remained largely ignorant about the other or others, cross these boundaries and suddenly find themselves placed in the same room, with a mediating voice encouraging them to speak.

This is what “Wisdom of the East”  intends to do: Having different calligraphic artworks, languages, and scripts in one exhibition will provide an opportunity for a broad conversation and the viewers will have a clear view of differences and similarities of those arts. Such viewing combinations are unique and will bring the public’s consideration to shared features: different calligraphic cultures highlight the power of the written word via inscribing it artistically.

Our partnership with Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC) will allow us to engage with Far East Asian, South Asian, and Middle Eastern immigrants and second- and third-generational communities. This exhibition supports artists locally and provides them with an exceptional platform to express their creative work.

We feel confident that you understand our commitment behind this exhibition and bringing communities together, and that our hearts and hands are in the right place to make a difference.

FINAL WORDS FROM OACC
Emphasis on divisions by race, class, geography, and gender are detrimental to society, and OACC challenges this negativity through art practice, dialogue, historical and cultural awareness, community partnerships, and civic engagement.

Arts and culture provide hope and resilience in the face of hardships, and can provide a pathway for healing and transformation.  OACC’s work to build vibrant communities through Asian and Pacific Islander (API) arts and cultural programs that foster intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue, understanding, collaboration, and social justice is especially important now.
