Please help to keep a reproductive health and sex education clinic serving the poorest and most vulnerable girls, women, and families in Jalisco, Mexico, open for another year. A minimum of 10,000 US Dollars (~180,000 Pesos) covers the basic expenses of the clinic for one year.
ABOUT THE CLINIC
CEDEJO is a non-profit health clinic based in Ajijic, Jalisco, MX, serving the poorest populations in the region. The health clinic offers family planning for women and men to aid in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. They also offer low-cost reproductive health consultations related to disease prevention, breast exams, and pap smears, and they lead sexual education and empowerment programs through a variety of community organizations, schools, and forums. Programs are geared toward adolescents and young adults and emphasize the active participation of men, as well as women, to ensure a higher quality of life for the family.

CURRENT PROJECTS THAT NEED FUNDING
Reproductive Care Clinic
The foundation of CEDEJO's work is providing reproductive health education, access to birth control & family planning methods, and preventative health services (i.e. pap smears & breast examinations) to women & girls. All other programs build upon these basic human rights of women to have choice & access to birth control, services & education.
$180,000 MXN (or $10,000 US Dollars) covers basic reproductive health clinic expenses for 12 months!

Pregnancy Prevention Program for Teens
CEDEJO offers an Educational Program for Pregnancy Prevention and Sexual Awareness with Gender Perspective to teenagers and young adults in the Lakeside area. The goal is to deliver information on sexual education & help promote pregnancy prevention.
$100,000 MXN (or $5,500 US Dollars) covers 6 months of workshops for up to 100 young adults.

Menstrual Cup and Hygiene Management Program
CEDEJO seeks to break the cycle of poverty and violence against women by promoting access to basic menstrual health supplies in conjunction with education about puberty, reproductive health, and hygiene.
CEDEJO distributes menstrual cups and health care training to girls throughout low-income communities surrounding Lake Chapala. Menstrual cups are safer than traditional menstrual products. They are made of medical grade silicone vs. toxic materials, can be easily and quickly cleaned, and are reusable for up to 10 years. The environmental impact of using a cup is significant; only generating ~6% of the plastic waste from tampons and only .4% of disposable pads. Since cups provide superior leak protection and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, they also provide greater freedom and confidence to girls and women; allowing them to go to school, play sports, and live life without worry or preoccupation about their periods. Most importantly, menstrual cups are much cheaper; on average, just 5% of the cost of pads and 7% of the cost of tampons, a benefit especially important for low-income communities and developing countries.

WHY GIVE TO THIS CAMPAIGN?
Cervical and breast cancer are the leading causes of death among women from ages 35 to 60 in Chapala, Jalisco.
CEDEJO is working to prevent these diseases, as well as other diseases, from affecting women through early detection and treatment programs.
Because of poverty and/or lack of education and/or failure of government assistance programs, many women cannot afford to see a nurse or doctor for a routine gynecological exam or prenatal care.
CEDEJO helps change this paradigm by educating women and girls about their options. CEDEJO often travels directly to vulnerable communities that most need services, offering low-cost or free consultations. Because Director Flores has been working in the area for over 40 years, the communities trust, respect, and respond to her.
Mexico ranks no. 1 for teen pregnancies among the 34 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). 6 out of 10 of those conceived around age 14 as a result of either sexual violence or a lack of access to contraceptives. Approximately 31% of adolescents aged between 15 and 19 have had sexual relations, but not responsibly: 56% of those cases resulted in pregnancies. A 2014 survey revealed that 44.5% of partners in that same age group used no contraceptive in their first sexual encounter. In addition, according to the United Nations Population Fund, Latin America is the only region in the world with an ascending trend in teenage pregnancy!
CEDEJO's pregnancy prevention programs help educate youth so that they are better able to manage their sexuality and gives them access to affordable birth control. CEDEJO programs are vital to countering youth pregnancies.
Millions of girls miss school because they lack the information and resources they need to navigate menstruation or because they can't afford to buy pads or tampons.
CEDEJO's Menstrual Cup and Hygiene Management programs help girls and women manage their periods with confidence and offer girls the education and support they need to stay in school and lead themselves, their families, and their communities, out of poverty. Menstrual cups are reusable for up to 10 years, are ~95% cheaper and produce ~ 97% less waste than pads and tampons.
Jalisco has the highest rates of violence against women in Mexico, with 60% of women have experienced violence by the hands of their partner.
CEDEJO offers presentations, workshops, and lectures through schools and other organizations in which the following topics are discussed: women’s empowerment, domestic violence, gender equality, STDs, prenatal care and childbirth, family planning, risks of teen pregnancy, and hygiene and health.

I'm Sheila, from Vermont, USA, and I have been a volunteer with CEDEJO since 2013. I have witnessed for years how invaluable CEDEJO's services are to the most vulnerable youth, women, and families in the poorest communities in the Lake Chapala region. CEDEJO and Director Sylvia Flores are my heroes, working tirelessly to promote women's empowerment and basic human rights.
I don't have much money to give to organizations whose missions I believe in but I am able to offer my time and technical skills to help them meet their goals. Over the years I've created and helped to maintain CEDEJO's website and social media accounts, updated their informational pamphlets, took photos of their work, wrote articles for local publications about their services, and organized two previous fundraisers in 2013 and 2015 . I wholeheartedly believe in CEDEJO's work and I hope that if you also see the value of the clinic that you will give a donation today.
