Food Security for needy Children in Kenya

Donation protected
Help Rotary fight poverty and improve the lives of needy children in Kenya.

Up to 75% of rural orphaned school children come to school with nothing in their stomachs.

Rotary has been active for some time providing sustainable milk and vegetable produce for needy and orphaned children in Meru District Kenya.

To continue this important work, we want to expand our project into unserviced areas of Timau & Meru, to establish a new herd of village cows to improve food security.

In partnership with the Rotary Club of Meru, Kenya, we can establish a breeding herd of Village Cows for a rural area not already serviced; where up to 500 needy and orphaned children live.

(Mixed breed)

(Borana Cow)

The hardy village cows we can provide are of two types; the Borana cow for beef and a mixed breed that provide 4-6 Litres of good quality milk; they are indigenous, hardy and tick resistant.

The place we want to establish the herd is a rural area of Timau and Meru in Kenya.

Could you help us by donating some funds for this project?

To make the project a success, we need at least 20 cows, a bull, a nighttime shelter, wages for herdsman 24 hours a day (for a period of 18 months to establish the herd), two truckloads of hay, medication and Vet care.

Each cow costs $450 and can breed one calf a year for approximately eight years, ensuring sustainability. Each cow will provide enough milk to feed up to 10 children a day. The more cows we can have, the more children we can provide food for.

Even $45 could go towards feeding a child daily!

Rotary will also match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000
, with thanks to Rotary District 9810 (subject to grant approval).

To get dollar for dollar funding, our fundraising needs to be completed by the end of August.

Rotary has a well established and experienced network in Kenya to supervise the care of a herd and to distribute milk to feed school children.

To see some of our other successful projects in Meru, Kenya, you can check out our video of an established herd of village goats.

By supporting these children with a secure food supply, we will enable them to concentrate at school and not become anxious about when their next meal is.

Help us take action to make a difference in improving the lives of these children.
