Help MTA Workers Affected By COVID-19

MTA employees are facing tremendous challenges and losses in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as they continue to move New York City. With a death toll standing at 179 (as of 5/17/20), these brave men and women report to their jobs on the frontline, so that the rest of New York's first responders and essential workers can get to theirs. Currently, there are hundreds of employees who are unable to work due to numerous circumstances without pay, including but not limited to:
- Being ordered to quarantine as a result of contracting coronavirus, experiencing symptoms and/or possible exposure to a person with coronavirus.
- Having no options for childcare for their children.
- Choosing to stay home to decrease the risk of bringing the virus home and spreading it to their loved ones with underlying conditions.
The MTA has refused to honor the new extended FMLA options enacted on 4/1/20, for COVID-19 related instances, which many employees had been relying on to continue being paid. This means that once an employee exhausts their normal paid time off, they will go without pay, until they return to work. Many employees have not been paid since March.
The proceeds raised through fundraiser will be donated to funds established by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), both of which directly benefit their members in need of financial assistance. The TWU Local 100 Widows & Orphans Fund supports families of represented employees who have died in the line of duty. The majority of MTA workers outside of Staten Island are represented by Local 100.
The ATU 726 Family Fund supports the bus operators and maintenance workers in Staten Island and their families. The family fund will be disbursed to assist the families of the two Staten Island based bus operators who have died from COVID-19 and employees currently at home without pay.
