Haven Kids Rock empowers underserved youth, who have been victims of trauma, abuse, homelessness or neglect, by introducing them to the musical arts. The program's vision for the past 12 years is an environment in which every student has a therapeutic outlet by giving them access to technical skills that opens up otherwise unreachable educational and professional opportunities.
The students are encouraged to share their personal experiences through songwriting, singing, dancing, instrumental instructions and acting , all of which are provided through our program. Haven Kids Rock was created specifically for Mott Haven Academy in the South Bronx where two-thirds of all students are either in foster care, the child welfare system, while the final third live in the poorest Congressional district in the U.S.

Background information on Mott Haven Academy Charter School
Mott Haven Academy is the first and most advanced school specifically designed to meet the needs of foster care and child welfare kids in New York City. Our mission is to empower children in an educational environment that addresses and reduces the barriers to academic success through the integration of family support services with a rigorous, college-preparatory academic program. While our school is open to the general Mott Haven community, two-thirds of our seats are reserved for children navigating the instability of the child welfare system across New York City.
Increasingly, Haven Academy's unique population, which includes children living in homeless shelters, facing immigration issues, and being transferred among foster care homes, is the norm for school populations across the country. The New York Times reports that 1 in 7 elementary students are homeless each academic year and nearly 30% of school-age children are living in poverty.
National social and political issues like gun violence, school bullying, and threats of deportation are part of the crippling reality Haven Academy's scholars face every day. Haven Kids Rock’s programming faces these issues head-on and provides an alternative for healing and opportunity for careers otherwise not available.
