Cape Verde's COVID-19 lockdown means months of no work for day labors, housekeepers, flea market vendors, etc. No social net means they don't eat. The president of Cape Verde has done much good work to save his country from COVID-19. Unfortunately, those living in Praia's slum, a place locals call, "Jamaica," although not dying so much from COVID-19, are experiencing great hunger. These are Kci Gee's neighbors.

My friends, relatives, and I have been sending him money this past week, $1000 so far, and Kci Gee has been exceptional diligent. But we can only do so much.  He estimates about 65 families of 4-8 people, some (~33) with babies and toddlers, need food help.

With the larger financial backing the GoFundMe campaign donations would allow, he’ll be able to purchase food at wholesale prices.  At those prices, Kci  thinks $30 will keep a family from starving for a week. For those families with babies and toddlers, we’re including an additional $15/week, providing baby/toddler specific food items. The fourth lockdown extension ends midnight May 31. No telling if another extension will be ordered, and how long after the extension lift before the people will be allowed to work again.  I’m shooting for two weeks.  To support 65 families for 2 weeks, $3900, plus an additional 33 food bags for those families with babies, $990 is $4890.  Kci Gee didn’t ask it but I want to offer to cover his late rent, $80 x 3 = $240 ($5130), paying one month per $1,000 sent, limited at $240 total.  The $670 balance covers transportation (for food purchases and deliveries, taxi’s or gas in a friend’s van cost around $25-$30 each time) and monetary transactional costs (GoFundMe and MoneyGram fees) = $5,800.

My wife and I met Kci Gee 18 months ago in Cape Verde. The former Liberian youth minister and current gospel musician impressed me then, and impresses me more even now. He is one of the most grateful persons I've ever met.  I dubbed him, "Santa Gee" for his good works, dropping food off without being asked and taking nothing in return but a sense of gratitude for being of service to those in dire need.

Help us help Santa Gee feed his starving neighbors for two weeks.  I transfer the donations to Santa Gee, and he does the rest,  . . . gratefully.
