Thank you for taking your time to consider my project. All families deserve to have a more positive birth outcome. I would like to hold a series of community based workshops on pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and postpartum care. Many times, women of color have shared that they felt ignored, traumatized or violated during their birth. Their partners share the trauma and at times feel helpless. The families attending theses interactive workshops will be able to advocate for themselves and become a part of the birth team as they should be.
Families, how ever they are defined, will be able to surround the birthing person with the love and care needed to support them on how they feed the baby and help them heal during the postpartum period. The will be able to reach out in following meet-up to reflect and continue to have support in child development.
As an advanced holistic maternal support practitioner, my goal is to lower the rates of maternal mortality and morbidity, improve the breastfeeding rate in my community, Families will be connected to the resources needed to further their care. It will bring me joy to see healthier mothers and families that continue to advocate for their health and the health of the community.
I am in need of teaching materials such as lifelike models , breastfeeding dolls, posters, books and videos on birth and breastfeeding. I will need markers and posters to make visible birth plans and affirmations. we will need pens and journals for notes. I will need mats and pillows for relaxation and birth preparation classes. I plan to have incentives such as baby wraps, gas cards and manual breast pumps for parents that attend the majority of the classes. We will need refreshments and water during breaks. After each series of classes have ended and following the births, I would like to hold a celebration for the birthing families to reflect.
I would like supplies to be able to decorate a venue.
Sometimes the occasions may not have a happy ending, there may be a medical situation or loss. I would like to be able to provide these families with the care needed and the means to help in healing of their choice.
The pandemic has opened another opportunity for me to reach the community. I am holding space for virtual learning and support at this time.
