Covid-19 Urgent Appeal: help keep girls in school

Donation protected
In Malawi, 1 in 2 girls are forced into marriage before their 18th birthday!

SheRose is a locally driven non-profit organisation that operates in Malawi. Our mission is to empower girls through education and remove all the barriers that hinder their progress in all areas of their lives; as a way of tackling the issue of child marriages and social injustice against women. We work to support, educate and empower girls to create a better, alternative future for themselves!

Research indicates that the pandemic will dramatically increase the rate of child marriage, making this a crucial time for us to provide interventions to minimise the detrimental impacts. It is anticipated that an additional 4 million girls will be vulnerable to enforced child marriage within the next two years, with the U.N forecasting this figure to reach an extra 13 million by the end of the decade as a result of COVID19.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19, the schools in Malawi have been closed as a social distancing measure. It is anticipated that when schools reopen, many girls will not return back to school, as Covid-19 will result in:

Ø  Rise in unemployment and other economic impacts, resulting in parents being unable to pay school fees. Secondary school education in Malawi is not free.

Ø  Financial burdens and worsening poverty placed on families, leaving families with no choice but to marry off their daughters early in exchange for dowries.

Ø  Organisations such as SheRose, who work to combat child marriages, finding these unprecedented times extremely difficult to operate business as usual and limiting their community interventions which spread messages around the dangers of child marriages.

Ø  School closures, which are often considered safe places for many girls who fear being at home will result in them being forced into child marriages. The current pandemic has meant girls are forced to be away from school and live in these potentially dangerous environments.

Our solution:

We are seeking to raise money to be able to address this imminent need!

Once schools are re-opened, our organisation will be instrumental in working to prevent girls dropping out of school. If girls do not return to school, gender gap in access to education will increase, and so will the exploitation of girls.

We aim to use the money raise in 2 ways:

1. Increasing our sponsorship opportunities to support more girls whose families are facing financial challenges (impacted by Covid-19) and are no longer able to pay for their child’s fees.

2. Increasing community workshop delivery to emphasise the dangers of child marriages across the entire community, which is a particularly crucial message during this time, when many families might be considering child marriages as a solution to their financial struggles.

Help us keep girls in education, and help them secure a better future for themselves!
