How are contestants selected to participate?

Our Kimisship recipient is a steward of her community as she dedicates her time to engage with others who have experienced social, emotional deficiencies.  Milwaukee’s youth have an increased percentage of being exposed to traumatic events.  Trauma has been scientifically proven to decrease student’s success rate as it causes a heightened response to stress.  Assisting in creating the perfect prom is an way to tell her, “Thank you.” Thank you for selflessly dedicating time and energy to strengthen the mental wealth of others. From a custom prom experience to having a platform for her voice, she will feel appreciated for her selflessness in acknowledging and actively combatting the struggles of her peers.

Here’s the story about how Kimistry came about:

A Milwaukee native and former MPS student, Kimberly Green, started the Kimiship in 2016.While she was an educator at Marshall High School (MPS) for nearly 5 years, she noticed the deficit in opportunities, specifically for young women of color to have scholarships, prom experiences, and a voice.

Using her sewing talents, Kimberly decided to not only raise money for a scholarship,  but to also design and make a prom dress for her scholarship's recipient. It is difficult to ignore the culture shift in the excitement around prom so making a dress would be a great way to express appreciation. Kimberly found that assisting in creating experiences the recipient would remember for the rest of her life is as rewarding as funding for her future.

But the opportunity goes deeper. Being a woman of color herself, Kimberly remembers the feeling of being immobilized by social and economic pressures despite her efforts to be a change-maker. Milwaukee, a city that is unfortunately known for the highest incarceration rates, lowest reading levels, and highest sex trafficking for black women is disheartening. The lack of platforms for young women of color to feel seen, heard, and to have a voice cannot be ignored. Kimberly pushes to stand to provide young women of color the opportunity to tell their stories about the complexities of living in Milwaukee.
