Like most Americans, I’m a descendant of immigrants. All four of my grandparents came here as refugees.
My father's parents fled Czechoslovakia in 1969 to find freedom to practice their religion and make choices in alignment with their beliefs.
When they arrived in North America with three kids in tow, the basement of their home was almost immediately filled with things their neighbors brought them to help them settle in.
Everyone who has ever moved into a new house or apartment knows how difficult it is to get organized. Imagine moving to a new city without knowing the language and without so much as a set of silverware.
This is when being able to accept help from good neighbors is such a valuable practice.
At its very essence, this is what it means to be human: to give help to other people in need, and to receive help when you are in need.
Let’s help our new neighbors get settled.
Welcome Home Jersey City is a nonprofit organization that supports refugees and asylees with education, housing, and job support in the Jersey City area. They run an enrichment program, Jersey City Fun Club, three Thursdays per month. To help families participate, they drive families to and from the meeting site and provide a meal and childcare.
Any size donation, added with donations from dozens of other people, will make a difference.
