TWO INCREDIBLE CAUSES, TWO SAILORS, ONE WEEK.
To raise vital funds for Macmillan and the Stroke Association.
Our reason
We are setting out on this challenge to raise vital funds for two charities which are very close to our hearts, Macmillan and Stroke Association. These two outstanding charities help support millions of people within the UK, people who are both living with cancer and people that have been affected by a stroke. These charities also support their family and friends during these difficult times, as often seeing a loved one go through either illness can be difficult.
Statistically within the UK, someone gets diagnosed with cancer every two minutes however, Cancer survival is improving and has doubled in the last 40 years. So by raising money and awareness for cancer, we feel there is hope that the survival rate will only increase not only in the UK but across the globe.
A stroke is a sudden and devastating illness, one which has a massive impact on peoples day to day lives, 5 out of 8 stroke survivors are left with a permanent dissability. In the UK there is one stroke every five minutes and there are over 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK. So raising money and awareness is paramount, so the necessary support can be in place for these people.
We have chosen to sail around mainland Britain to symbolise the support that these charities provide to people up and down the country. Their work is vital within the community to help people who may be struggling. In doing this challenge we wanted to symbolise the solidarity of the UK in fighting and preventing these illnesses.
Our Challenge
Our challenge is to sail non-stop unassisted around mainland Britain in under 1 week on a catamaran in aid of Macmillan and Stroke Association. We will travel a distance of ~2,600KM in under one week.
Our Team
Our team consists of just two of us, Josh and Sam. We have been sailing with one another for many years and not only have a great friendship on the water but also off the water too. This strong friendship and bond has been made stronger through our passion for sailing and all things water sports. So when Josh shared the idea with Sam, there was just one answer. Which was YES! Their great friendship will push them through the difficulties they may face on this challenge.
There is one place you will always find us too together, and it is usually chasing down a storm, figuring out which kite to use or out sailing! We have been sailing together for many years, and have been fortunate enough to race together in a number of events, where we have managed to come away with some great results!
For both of us being on the water always provides us with a sense of belonging, a place to relax and a place to escape. The ocean has so many characteristics, which constantly change and evolve, it is something that both of us are in awe of.
Our passion and escape is the ocean. We hope to use this to make a difference to others.
Over the last year for Josh, this has become even more apparent than ever, as one grandparent was diagnosed with Prostate cancer and another grandparent having a stroke which left their right-hand side immobile.
Also, Josh's partners' mother has been fighting cancer for 14 years. She was first diagnosed back in 2006 and has had it a further 3 times. She has been receiving treatment since 2018 which is ongoing. Her positive attitude, outlook and thirst for life is something that inspired us to take this crazy idea on and make it a reality.
