Learning Economics the Real-World Way at BizTown

ATTENTION!

The Clarks Creek 5th grade needs your help to raise money for an educational field trip to Biztown. We need to raise at least $4000 for our school to be able to participate! Our goal is to make this so everyone can attend without worry!

Biztown is an educational field trip where kids are taught about how to run a community for a day. Each student is taught in a class about different things about economics and how to run a community. According to https://www.juniorachievement.org/, “JA BizTown allows students to see, touch, and live the experience of personal finance in a real-life setting of stores, shops, and financial institutions, by basically becoming "an adult for the day." Their slogan is “ Help prepare today’s students for a bright future.”

The Clarks Creek 5th grade is also designing and working several other fundraisers. We’ve participated in every step of the process, including researching, writing and presenting proposals to our school administration, working collaboratively to support our friends on their fundraisers, and had lots of fun. We are doing all of these things to raise money to go to Biztown. We are hoping this GoFundMe can help it out a ton because we are not going to raise $4000 while making food, drinks, school dress-ups, and auctions. We really want to go to Biztown to have a field trip where we will have a learning environment all around us. Please help us raise money to have a school 5th grade field trip.

If you help us go to Biztown by donating the slightest amount of money, we thank you for letting us learn and maybe even grow up to be Engineers or Rocket Scientists. If you donate to our GoFundMe we want to give you a big thank you from us, Nolan, Trey, Jack, Grahm, and Kylle, and a thank you on behalf of the whole Clarks Creek fifth grade.

*A Note from the Teacher:

Who I am: My name is Bethany Bammann and I am a 5th Grade teacher at Clarks Creek Elementary. This is my 5th year of teaching, and I am so grateful for my job. I get to work with the very best students in the very best school!  We are currently the largest elementary school in Plainfield. We have seven 5th grade classrooms and a total of 186 5th grade students.

What we need and why we need it: The mission of Plainfield Schools is “Bringing Joy to Learning”. One way we have committed to this is by providing our students with fun, exciting, and real-life applicable activities that address standards in ways that will be meaningful for our students. Our 5th grade class needs to raise the funds to pay for a field trip to BizTown, an economic simulation experience. We are asking for your help so that every student can attend Biztown, regardless of financial situation. In 5th grade, we go on an amazing outdoor education overnight field trip. Students learn about Indiana Science and Social Studies standards in a hands on, engaging environment. This is a rich and exciting opportunity for students, and we already ask parents to help with their student’s camp fee. Due to this, we want to avoid parents having to make a choice between field trips based on cost. We are raising the money so that each student can attend BizTown Interactive Economic Simulation without asking parents for any more contributions and be exposed to both valuable learning experiences.

How we’re doing this:  This project has been completely led by the students. They’ve worked through the entire Design Thinking process and are running all fundraisers BY THEMSELVES! They’ve learned so much through this experience. We’ve worked with food services and understand the laws associated with food in school. We’ve gone through the process of receiving approval from administration and writing a professional proposal (and rewriting when faced with rejection!). Students organized themselves into groups, are doing all of the planning, organizing, and advertising, and working all fundraisers. Students have analyzed costs and chosen materials. These students are hoping their hard work makes a difference in their lives and the lives of their classmates. In addition to the GoFundMe, students will be working a cookie booth, hosting a quarter war, and getting the whole school involved in a dress up day. We’ve set a big goal, but this field trip has a big cost ,and these students have big ideas!

Any amount you donate will be appreciated and go to our Student Activities Fund to be directly used in service to students. As you consider making a contribution, I do want to let you know that there is a transaction fee of 2.9% and $0.30 for your donation that is part of the service fees we incur for using GoFundMe to help us in our fundraising efforts.

We are grateful for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Bammann
