MARTIAL ARTS PROJECT FOR DYSFAVOURED YOUTH, BRASIL

Do you share the idea that movement is essential and beneficial for childrens´development? That all children should have the opportunity to learn and participate in a sport?
This project is founded by martial arts teachers and physical education graduates Valdivino Rodrigues and his wife Miriam França, in Itinga, Lauro de Freitas, Brasil.
The project of their martial arts school, “Hapkido Sol Nascente”, is offering free Hapkido and Muay Tai classes for, to begin with, 60 children and youngsters who do not have the resources to pay for a sport.
They will open their martial arts school to these youths 2 days a week, on a voluntary basis. The children who will participate are of vulnerable background, socially and economically.
Through Martial Arts, these experienced teachers want to contribute to the children’s development and self-esteem. Giving them important social skills and discipline needed for future success.
Helping them to avoid conflict and enhancing self control, being part of a sports school contributes to the children´s physical and emotional development and wellbeing.
A dedicated training over a period of time has many benefits for youngsters and may prevent them from leaving school at an early age or choosing to get involved in illicit action, often followed by harsh consequences there.
The neighborhood of Itinga, which has 80.000 inhabitants is localized in the metropolitan region of Salvador da Bahia.
There are many problems that make a big amount of the population there vulnerable. Hard urban infrastructure is very precarious being that many of its roads are unpaved, water is often inacessible, public transport is largely unavailable to the inhabitants, children´s dropout rates from school at an early age are high, so are pregnancy rates in adolescence and unemployment.
Adding to these socio- economical vulnerabilities Itinga is the area with the most homicides in the metropolitan region of Salvador.
Valdivino and Miriam are much experienced, splendid and trusted Martial Arts athletes with a desire to contribute to their community socially.
I had the opportunity to train with them for a few months and admired their social engagement (when I trained with them, they were offering free fitness classes to working women at 5 am in the morning, before having to get ready for work).
We hope you can help them buy the materials needed for the youths, so they can start their free Martial Arts training in Itinga!
The project respects differences in social and economical backgrounds, contributing free classes for those who would otherwise not have the possibility of practicing a sport in the context of a martial arts school.

Necessitam porém de materiais para prover os jovens de roupa desportiva e adequada para o treino, para comprar tatamis e protetores como também bases de chute e afins.
Esperamos que possam e queiram ajudar nessa proposta sem fins lucrativos e de alto valor para a comunidade!
