Collaring Elephants in South Africa

Elephants are the gardeners, the water bringers, the seed sowers of the wild. Elephants are a keystone species but are under threat from all sides. We need everyone who cares about the remaining elephants on our planet to assist in protecting as many as we can.

In South Africa, a team has been set up to collar a semi-wild herd of elephants that was successfully re-introduced to a reserve in 2015, released from a commercial safari company for rehabilitation. They already have bred – 2 baby elephants! – but have yet to interact with other wild elephants. It is vital to track their behavioral patterns and movements when a wild breeding herd is introduced to the reserve alongside them. 

bedoco is asking you to be a part of something very special - reintegrating these elephants back into the wild so we can look forward to a new generation of born-free elephants. bedoco is working with the Blue Sky Society Trust  to support Wildlife Vets  to collar three bulls and one female from this re-introduced and breeding herd – and we asking for your help to purchase two collars. 

Elephants are collared to protect them. Tracking elephants does much more than trace their movements, tracking protects them against being killed for their ivory. It also helps mitigate elephant and human conflict, which can be as devastating to the elephant population as poaching.

We are heading out soon to join the team of vets in South Africa to assist in collaring the four elephants and will report back on our website and social media. bedoco has already committed to cover the cost of two of the elephant collars and hope we can raise funds to cover the costs of two more collars; this includes the vet fees, transport and other costs required to get to the elephants.
