The COVID-19 pandemic has been placing increasing strain on the healthcare system, stretching our resources thinner and thinner. In Northern Ontario, many of our frontline healthcare professionals are facing a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks, gowns, gloves, and N95 respirators. This shortage of PPE is placing our healthcare providers at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 and spreading it amongst themselves and to patients.

The Northern Ontario #PPEforHCP campaign is an initiative started by a group of allied healthcare students who are collecting PPE donations and redistributing them to health care facilities in any community across Northern Ontario that submits a request. To address specific PPE shortages, we are also producing and distributing 3D-printed face shields and ear savers in partnership with Northern Ontario makerspaces, libraries and engineering departments.  Funds raised will be used in two ways, in conjunction with projects we are running to address the need for PPE:

1) PPE Drive: Funds raised through this campaign are used towards shipping costs. We collect PPE donations from individuals and businesses and redistribute them within the same community. In keeping the safety of our donors a priority, we offer to ship donations to where they are needed most in Northern Ontario so that donors do not have to leave their homes. In addition, if we have additional donations, we ship PPE to remote communities.  Currently, our shipping costs are approximately $30-$40 per day.

2) 3D-Printed Face Shields and Ear Savers: Funds are used toward the cost of plastic filament and transparent acetate sheets.  3D-printed face shields and ear savers are being produced in non-MDE licensed facilities and distributed free of charge to healthcare facilities. Our partnered 3D producers are volunteering their time and printers to produce these products 24/7 to meet the demand in our communities. Each face shield costs $2 to make.

Our mandate is to supply healthcare providers with vital PPE so that they can continue to provide quality care to our communities and save lives while reducing the risk to themselves. The wellbeing and protection of our health care workers is crucial to the continued performance of our healthcare system as a whole.

Please note that funds will not be used towards wages, as our initiatives are entirely volunteer-run.  Any amount would go a long way - even a $2 donation, as this is one more face shield we can make that will be used to protect a frontline worker!

Please feel free to email us if you have any questions, at [email redacted]. More information about our initiatives can be found at: www.northernontarioppe.ca.
