We Got You: Hudson County Hunger Project

The Hudson County Hunger Project was born from a conversation between Dr. Leeja Carter a Jersey City (JC) resident and Mory, co-owner of Square 1 eatery in JC. Leeja and and Mory were discussing the impact the coronavirus pandemic was having on our global and JC communities. Further, Leeja and Mory discussed how local restaurant owners wanted to find ways to use their food supplies, kitchens, and staff to feed JC's most vulnerable residents: the homeless, elderly, as well as those who are unable to afford meals and food. However, due to the economic impact, Square 1 was close to closing. Further, owners and community members weren't sure how to coordinate such a program.

Thus the Hudson County Hunger Project was born.

Leeja, an Assistant Professor at Long Island University-Brooklyn, mobilized several of her current students as well as alumni to create a task force to address this need. The Hudson County Hunger Project is a group of dedicated community members, restaurant owners, and students within the NJ/NYC area working to address hunger in Hudson County during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HCHP is staffed by a mighty virtual team that work to coordinate free boxed meal deliveries to JC's most vulnerable groups. Partnering with local eateries, drivers, and the Hudson County Health Department, meals are created to order.

HCHP is creating a one-stop-shop for families, seniors, and the most vulnerable populations to request free food and meals from volunteer restaurants as well as tracking our program in hopes to scale to other cities most impacted by COVID-19 in the coming days.
