Empower Mama Africa

Donation protected
Hello all, my name is Peter Tarimo, founder/Director of social enterprise, Mama Africa Gift Shop. After completing my studies in 2017, I returned from Ireland to my hometown, Moshi, Tanzania, a tourist hub that is thriving in various forms of local arts.

Using skills gained from various work opportunities with Apple, UNICEF and Concern, I identified a major gap in the arts trade-industry in my community that was inevitably capitalist and not benefiting any of the communities that produced them in any way.

I developed Mama Africa as a platform marketplace to enable women and men producing art to sell their creations, thus becoming sustainable and improving their livelihood. It has since grown from supporting local communities in Moshi and now expanded to the entire Kilimanjaro region.

My team and I are happy to say that we are proud supporters of local community organizations and the sole proprietors of all art produced by groups and individuals.  Such women empowerment groups we work with are Masaa Women, Voice of Empowered Women Foundation, Family of Good Hope, Wakipa Women Group  also Pamoja Tunaweza boys and girls (street children), Tumaini for Africa Orphanage and  Tatu Rafiki Deaf Group.

At Mama Africa we are happy to take the risk of investing into the pieces of art brought to us. A lot of these groups are doing all they can to be sustainable and that is through finding local markets that can help them sell their products.

Our strategy has been very successful for the past two and a half years until the COVID-19 global pandemic struck. As a giftshop most of our business accomplishments were thanks to tourism. Due to this global crisis, all businesses have been affected just like in your community.

As we are unaware of the timeline towards a cure, our community, just like yours, is looking to for help. Mama Africa is currently unable to continue to support its loving and amazing artists. We are asking for you, our friends, to help us. We want our artist to be able to self-isolated without having any financial fears.

We should not lose hope; the future is bright when opportunities are present.

As such, we have an option for you to buy anything at the shop such as the jewels, paintings, carvings etc. and we can organise for your piece of art to be shipped to you or keep it aside for you to pick it up one day on your visit (back) to Moshi, Tanzania.

Mama Africa hopes you are all healthy and safe. We are always keeping you in our prayers and sending positive energy to the universe.

We truly appreciate your support either by donating or by sharing us with friends and family. Any amount helps.

Asante sana,
