"As my first book hits the press, I am deep into the research for the second one, A Boston Schooner in the Royal Navy: Commerce and Conflict in Maritime British America, 1768--1772, which I intend to finish by the end of 2020. I have made one trip to Maryland, in September, for the primary source research, funded by a small grant from the Early American Industries Association (thank you!) I have applied for seven grants this year to fund the second trip,and as of today, I've been turned down for all of them (they are extremely competitive because there aren't enough of them out there). This year's grant application cycle is over. So, as admittedly audacious as this is, I am soliciting small private contributions toward funding the necessary two weeks in Chestertown, MD this summer to finish the research. We will make up the difference between anything we collect here and the total required.
I realize that my project is not going to get humans off this planet or cure a disease. It will not alleviate hunger or pay someone's medical bills. I make no claim that someone should donate to this instead of something like that. But, if you are inclined to support quality humanities work, I would certainly appreciate it.
For those who aren't aware, academic publishing rarely pays authors; print runs are too small. I'm unlikely to see a penny from any book I publish. If this book makes me any royalties, I will happily disburse those to any contributors before keeping any for myself.
You're welcome to remain anonymous or not; regardless, you'll be in the Acknowledgements when the book is out, which should be around the end of 2021.
