EMS -Paramedics and EMTs- is not on the frontlines of COVID-19. We are behind enemy lines. we are the special forces dropped in as a quick reaction force. Despite our unique situation and our special skill set. We like everyone else were ill equipped to handle the task set forth.
I am a NYC 911 Paramedic, I respond to people in their homes sick with COVID-19. Many of whom are still unsure if they have it and expose us and anyone else unknowingly. I must assume every person who calls us is infected.
I cannot use an N95 it is not effective and hinders my asthma. I must use a special piece of equipment called a PAPR. It has a filter and a motor connected to a full face helmet. It protects me from the environments I walk into.
This device was not provided to me by my employer. I had to personally buy it out of my own pocket. An unforeseen expense I was hardly ready to pay. The prices keep rising for this life saving equipment and I was forced to borrow my brothers charge card and purchased a system at a crazy markup.
At the end of the month the bill is due and I can hardly afford this $3000 expense. I ask that you help me so I can serve you safely. Please donate generously, any extra money raised will go towards more PAPR's and N95's for those on the ambulances of NYC.
