Das Side by Side Early Intervention Centre in Namibia unterstützt benachteiligte und beeinträchtigte Kinder aus den Townships rund um Windhoek. Da es in Namibia keinen Zugang zu Frühförderung und Vorschulbildung für Kinder mit besonderen Bedürfnissen gibt, ist die Einrichtung eine essentielle Stütze für diese Familien. Als NGO ist die Organisation konstant auf Spenden angewiesen, um sowohl den Kindern und Familien zu helfen, notwendige Utensilien (z.B. Windeln, Nahrung) zu beschaffen als auch die Fixkosten für Gehälter und Miete aufzubringen.
In unserer Zeit als Freiwillige haben wir miterleben können, wie viel Herzblut die Mitarbeiter in die Arbeit mit den Kindern stecken. Durch fördernde Projekte und liebevolle Zuneigung erleben die Kinder erhebliche Fortschritte in ihrer Entwicklung. Zu den grundlegenden Zielen der Einrichtung zählen:
- Individuelle Entwicklungsziele zu erreichen und auf körperliche Bedürfnisse für Kinder mit schweren Behinderungen einzugehen (z.B. Zerebralparese)
- Workshops für Familien, um den Eltern notwendige emotionale und physische Hilfestellungen zu leisten
- Vorbereitung der Kinder auf einen möglichen Schuleintritt
Aufgrund der derzeitigen Covid19-Pandemie ist ein Großteil der Sponsoren abgesprungen, deren regelmäßige Spenden für den Erhalt der Einrichtung unerlässlich ist. Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt ist die weitere Entwicklung der Organisation unklar. Im Falle ausbleibender Spendengelder sieht sich Side by Side dazu gezwungen das Projekt permanent aufzugeben.
87% der Kinder mit besonderen Bedürfnissen in Namibia haben noch nie eine Therapie und frühkindliche Entwicklung zur Optimierung ihrer Lebensqualität besucht. Side by Side teilt die Überzeugung, dass das Problem des mangelnden Bewusstseins erfolgreich angegangen werden und durch Erziehung, Rehabilitation und Schulung der Eltern, Lehrer und der Gemeinschaft als Ganzes aktiv angegangen werden kann.

The Side by Side Early Intervention Centre in Namibia supports disadvantaged and disabled children from the townships around Windhoek. Since there is no access to early intervention and pre-school education for children with special needs in Namibia, the facility is an essential support for these families. As a NGO, the organisation is constantly dependent on donations to help the children and families to obtain necessary utensils (e.g. nappies, food) as well as to cover the fixed costs for salaries and rent.
During our time as volunteers, we have been able to see how much heart and soul the staff puts into their work with the children. Through supporting projects and loving affection, the children experience considerable progress in their development. The basic goals of the institution include:
- Achieve individual developmental goals and address physical needs for children with severe disabilities (e.g. cerebral palsy)
- Workshops for families to provide parents with the necessary emotional and physical support
- Preparation of the children for a possible school entry
Due to the current Covid19 pandemic, the majority of sponsors whose regular donations are essential for the maintenance of the facility, have withdrawn. At this point in time, the further development of the organisation is unclear. In case of missing donations Side by Side has no alternatives but to permanently abandon the project.
87% of children with special needs in Namibia have never received therapy nor early childhood development to improve their quality of life. Side by Side shares the conviction that the problem of lack of awareness can be successfully addressed and actively tackled through education, rehabilitation and training of parents, teachers and the community as a whole.
