Help the Guatemalan Cloud Forest in COVID Times

Donation protected
It is no secret that Conservation is not some lucrative business and that tropical ecosystems are highly endangered and we all benefit from them on a daily basis. But Conservation is not only for everyone, it needs everyone's involvement too.

Here at Ranchitos Del Quetzal (Purulhá, Guatemala) we work together with the local communities, provide jobs for them in the conservation and tourism sector, and host a myriad of educational, research, and conservation activities for national and international visitors.

We are located in one of the most beautiful ecosystems of rural Guatemala. The cloud forest is the home of the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno, also Guatemala's national bird) and hundreds of other forms of life. As a natural reserve, we depend on tourism as an income and due to the ongoing global crisis, we are now struggling to maintain our activities and the daily lives of all the people that work here.

As much as we are trying to keep everyone safe by closing all operations in our Natural Reserve and recommending all our workers to stay at home, all 12 members of our conservation family here at Ranchitos del Quetzal depend on their salaries for their daily lives. But since tourism must also come to a halt at the moment, we need your help to keep things going!

No matter what, we have the commitment to keep protecting this forest and the people that depend on it so the next generations can also enjoy and benefit from it the way we do - or even better.

But we need your help!

How we will use the money:
Normally, 12 people work in our Reserve. Part of the raised funds will go to keep paying them their salaries during this period of physical distancing.

The quarantine period is directly impacting our normally expected income from tourists, which we usually use for:
- Orchid Conservation (reintroduction) Project
- Creating environmental education material for kids
- Maintenance of the reserve
- Other research projects we are currently working on (including the reproduction of native plant species key for the Quetzal conservation, and monitoring and biological research on the local mastofauna and herpetofauna

Transparency:
Following the GoFundMe rules, only Supported Countries can start a campaign and Guatemala is not one of them. Ranchitos del Quetzal, fortunately, has a fellow Guatemalan friend that lives in Austria and she is launching this campaign for us and we will be fully transparent throughout the whole process to assure you your money reaches the Natural Reserve Ranchitos del Quetzal, and afterward, we'll keep informing throughout our social media platforms how we are using the money (as we described above).
