It’s a hard call to ask for help when so many people need help right now. But I know to keep The Book Tavern alive and able to serve our community during and after this crisis, we will need more than the revenue coming in through the programs we’ve launched over the past month. We’ve been so grateful for everyone’s response to our Surprise Care Package program (over 60 care packages ordered and delivered already!); for those who’ve bought books through our affiliate site, bookshop.org/shop/thebooktavern ; and especially for champions like our teacher friend who bought books for the families of the students she teaches. It has kept our spirits high to see how we all care for each other. Even with this amazing support, it’s simply not enough.
Governor Kemp has extended our Shelter-in-Place order through the end of April and we are committed to doing what is right to keep you, our community, and our employees safe. We are currently closed to foot traffic in the store and use traditional shipping, our personal contact-free home delivery, and contact-free curbside pickup to get books to those who need them. We’re looking to bring in more items to help sustain us while staying at home like adult coloring books, puzzles, and games those of us who live together can play. To get through this time, we’ll have to continue being innovative and figuring out new ways of doing things.
We have applied for loans from the SBA and several grants, and we’ll continue those efforts of alternate funding, but even if we get the maximum amounts, it wouldn’t be enough, and the majority of it will have to be repaid. The money you contribute will go towards meeting our commitments to paying employees, rent, and utilities, but also to invest in strengthening our ability to meet your reading needs while we maintain social distancing, and perhaps most importantly, a reserve of funds to be able to re-open when this season has passed.
If you’re able to donate any amount, you have our gratitude. Even a small amount puts us closer to our goal. If you love the store but can’t donate, please share this with friends.
