Fundraiser Update:  A Celebration of Life for Duncan Grant

We have added $2000 to the fundraising goal in preparation for a Celebration of Life for Duncan, planned on the anniversary of his birthday on August 28th.  Erica had saved up $2200 in preparation for this event and was victim of a theft that left her without that savings, her ID and her phone. The money raised through this campaign will be used to replace the money that was lost, which was intended for food for the guests (including Covid-19 safe food prep and distribution), and printing costs for a small book of dedications, memories and photos of Duncan.

The months of May June and July 2020 marked the highest overdose deaths in Vancouver. In the Downtown Eastside, many people experienced isolation, trauma, and loss through the dual pandemics of Covid-19  and the overdose crisis.

August 28th commemorates the birthday of Duncan Grant, who passed away in the early months of Covid-19 in his SRO on April 7, 2020. Duncan worked tirelessly to support the community he lived in, serving food at Main and Hastings every day in 2020.

His mother Erica Grant continues the tradition through Erica’s DTES Response Team, providing food security and serving the community with honour and respect, in loving memory of her son and in tribute for the lives lost.  On the anniversary of Duncan's birthday on August 28th, we honour Duncan and celebrate his life.

Erica Grant is a Downtown Eastside resident who is works with utter devotion on the front lines in the DTES as a peer support worker with Carnegie Community Action Project and the SRO Collective.  To see the work that Erica has been doing in support of her community amid the Covid-19 Emergency, visit her team's facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TeamDTES/

You can visit Duncan's Memorial Page here: https://www.facebook.com/duncangrantmemorialpage

If you knew Duncan you are invited to leave your condolences and beloved memories of Duncan as comments on that page.

*Please note:  This is an UPDATE to the fundraiser created in April.  The campaign was created to support Erica Grant through the tragic passing of her beloved son, Duncan Grant.   In April, $1295 was raised and used for a small memorial and ceremonial fire for only close family and friends of Duncan due to Covid-19 regulations.  We are so grateful to everyone who donated in April to support the memorial that took place shortly after Duncan's passing.  Thank you to everyone who was able to support in April, and everyone who may be able to make a contribution for the Celebration of Life.
