Support Us so we can Support Them.

The PBS Community Foundation (PBSCF) is a vital means of support for hundreds of developmentally disabled young adults. These individuals strive to live meaningful, independent lives without isolation. They are active, valued members of our local communities and the greater world. And like all of us, these ‘self-directed’ individuals rely on their friends, families, support services and community members to help them navigate the complexities of life.

The personal and communal isolation resulting from the Coronavirus Pandemic has been devastating to this vulnerable population. They are facing unprecedented losses in vital services and supports. In response, PBSCF, as a nonprofit organization, quickly adapted our free, popular, group initiatives to easy, virtual meetup formats in hopes of providing fun ways for this population to reconnect, rejuvenate and share positivity.

Our Big Time Glee and Nassau Voice singers are now belting out popular Disney songs over live Zoom meetings. Every week we offer a relaxing Yoga Without Boundaries class and an online group hangout during our Midweek Meetup. We are even getting artsy with our rainbow studded Crafting Connection group. The inherent need to connect during this unsettling time is so pressing, in fact, our virtual group attendance is almost double our physical attendance before the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak!

We are on the ‘front lines’ battling for the wellbeing of our participants and friends. In response to resource shortages, we have compiled a list of local services available for free on our website (www.pbscommunityfoundation.org ) including food programs, mental and physical health services, online learning resources, virtual tours, entertainment, and more. Direct Support Professionals are mandated essential workers and often use our programs and initiatives to provide information and opportunities for those they serve.

It is clear the need is great, and while we are diligently moving ahead with our important work, the sad reality is that PBSCF is in financial jeopardy. Widespread financial insecurity has significantly slowed traditional forms of fundraising. Our key fundraising events have been canceled due to the Coronavirus. We have been challenged to find alternative means to financially support our amazing programs. but It has not been easy, and unfortunately, we have already been forced to make some difficult reductions in our initiatives and staffing.

Without your timely financial support, we will not be able to continue our essential work. We are asking you to Support Us now so we can Support Them well into the future! PLEASE, GIVE!
