It’s wonderful that as an International movement we can gather in this way to celebrate Buddha Day - people from across the globe - with a shared practice. An International Network of support and inspiration. We are fortunate in Triratna that we have excellent networks of friendship, so that our vision, inspiration and ideas can be shared and we can respond more effectively to need and suffering in the world, as we learn from and support each other.

The situation in India

In our Indian Sangha right now, people want to respond to the terrible situation they are faced with, as a result of the Covid19 Pandemic. The lockdown we are all experiencing globally doesn’t have the same impact for everyone - our friends in the Sangha in India are in the midst of particularly difficult conditions at this time - The most vulnerable population in India are daily wage earners who have no economic stability and are absolutely dependent on daily work to live.  Without a daily wage, they don’t have enough money and resources for their family to survive.

India is facing not only mass starvation, but issues like fear, depression, family disputes and domestic violence. The pandemic is also affecting Triratna’s work in India as many Buddhist Centres are not open and have no income.

The Response so far

So, Sangha members in India have been responding and reaching out to help those in need around them - people from around 24 different Buddhist Centres and Triratna initiatives in India have distributed food parcels for the last week or two to nearly 12,000 families and  60,000 people, across India (Maharashtra, Uttarpradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Chatisgad, Kerala, Tamilnadu  etc).

The co-ordinators of these efforts in India are extremely thankful to hundreds of individuals including Order Members, Mitras and friends in India and abroad as well to the Karuna Trust for their support so far...

The Need

However, with the extension of the lockdown and the extent of the need, more resources are needed to mobilize and co-ordinate many more people in the Sangha to help those in need.

100 Triratna locations are ready to respond to this need including 34 Triratna Centres, 15 Triratna social projects (Bahujan hitay) and other Triratna organizations like Aryaloka Computer Education, Bahujan Hitay Society, Amravati and Nagaloka.

This can happen because of the networks and connections in Triratna in India

How it will happen

The response will work by:

1. Designing an action plan that any centre or group can put into effect quickly and effectively. A step by step guide to what needs to be done and how to do it.

2. Devising a support structure so that any group or centre responding using this plan can get support and guidance, as well as feed back into a growing body of experience that may help others.

3. Organising a way to share information about all the efforts that are being made to give confidence and inspiration to others, as well as to enable best practice to be shared. Triratna India Media could host such information sharing, as well as post short videos of the work being done.

This work is a vital response by the Sangha in India to the suffering they are seeing around them - But they need money to co-ordinate these efforts effectively and pay for the resources.
