Surgery for Javi

Spanish Footballer Javi Verdu Sanchez arrived in Tasmania, Australia early in 2020 to play football for Tasmanian National Premier League side Kingborough Lions United FC.

A very likeable and talented player, Javi very quickly fitted in with his new team mates and club and has been warmly welcomed by the broader Tasmanian football community.  After having played the traditional pre-season competition, the Summer Cup, Javi's life was turned upside down on  Tuesday 17 March.  With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic becoming a major challenge right across the world, Football Federation Australia announced that from 12.00am on Wednesday 18 March, all football actvities would be suspended until 14 April, which has since been extended to 31 May 2020.

Making the most of his last training session before the suspension of all football, Javi unfortunately sustained a very serious injury to his left knee on the early evening of Tuesday 17 March and now requires a total knee reconstruction.

This unbelievably and unfortunate injury happened literally less than six hours before the enforced suspension of football and has left Javi somewhat stranded here in Tasmania as he was unable to fly back to his home country of Spain because of the total global lockdown and the closure of all international borders.

Javi's medical team here in Tasmania have been very supportive however, he was advised that if he did not have the operation within the next few weeks it would be ten (10) to eighteen (18) months before he would be able to undergo the required surgery.  Of course with no date or timing yet decided for the reopening of international flights and in the interests of Javi's physical and mental well being, he must have this operation which has now been scheduled for Friday 22 May.

Including the various medical assessments and costs to date, this crucial operation plus the required post surgery rehabilitation, after insurance, is estimated to be around AUD$12,500.00.  Unfortunately Javi nor the club has this sort of money and so we are asking, on Javi's behalf, for your help particularly the Tasmanian football community.

We are living in extraordinary times, something none of us would have predicted and here we have an extraordinarily unfortunate accident literally hours before the national then global suspension of the sport Javi and many of us love.

Please find it in your heart to help this young man who is away from his home and family, as we would want others to help our sons or daughters if they were in the same predicament on the other side of the world.

We appreciate any amount that you can afford to give and hope to raise the $12,500.00 over the next 30 days.

Thank you.
